Two things are gonna happen with the rice hat, either:

a) it gets removed before opening because it's considered racist/cultural appropriation

b) it gets sold in all gifts shops and this summer every AP and instagrammer will be walking around DLR wearing them

Either one would be hilarious and ridiculous.
They're gonna go the first time a CM of Asian descent puts one on. Kind of amazing how they didn't forsee something that simple, particularly in PC-obsessed California.

I suspect the first batch of costumes included more burkha-like headgear. I wouldn't be surprised if after doing their research, Disney found the rice-hat appropriation to be the less offensive alternative.

The rice hat is awful. Headscarfs would've felt in line with Batuu's Eastern inspirations. Not to say the rice hats do not as there surely is a Vietnamese influence with the forest of the planets, but the marketplace feels much more Arabian.

They're not racist except for when non-Asians wear them to pretend to be Asian (e.g., a Caucasian taking an entertainment role that would be better played by an Asian since the character is Asian, but the system is biased toward hiring Caucasians; or, a non-Asian wearing one as a costume because a nationality is a 'role' or funny?).

In Batuu, non-Asians wear them to be some non-Earthican culture that has nothing to do with Earthican Asia.

I agree. It's not racist, but it is cultural appropriation - BUT, Star Wars was built on cultural appropriation. That's the whole post-modern point of it all.

Cultural appropriation is only when one identifies as an ethnicity or culture they are not. For example, a white woman claiming to be African American or Native American. Those are cultural appropriation. Taking from and enjoying other cultures is cultural appreciation which this is more akin to.

Cultural appropriation is also when you use another person's culture as a costume or fashion accessory. Example, girls at Coachella in Indian Headresses or wearing Bindi's.

Right, like that John Dunbar. Or Jake Sully.

I would say only if done is a tasteless manner.

It’s great to say that, but a lot of people from cultures that have had a history of their traditional wear being exploited for costuming/profit do disagree. However I don’t think the rice hat has a major history of this, And as there is a precedent already in the movies I dont think many would bat an eye. It’s is also modified enough to not seem exact.

I'm afraid you've got it backwards here.

Batuu (the Hawaiian word for methamphetamines, don't forget) is in a distant galaxy a long, long time ago. This clothing was created and exists tens of thousands of years before humans developed on Earth, much less before humans formed distinct cultures in what is now Southeast Asia and began farming rice.

It's the Southeast Asian rice farmers who are guilty of cultural appropriation, and they should be ashamed of themselves! They should send an apology letter to the Batuuvians, and also consider renaming their airport. Shame on the Asians! Shame!
