Like most theme parks Universal's rides have always lacked heart to me, which is why I've always preferred Disney.

Yep, agreed. There's something I refer to as 'full immersion', and Disney does it best. Universal is always a one-off day of the vacation and never captures the full potential of being a fully-immersive theme park. Potterland is getting close, but as soon as you leave it, you're thrust back into six flags carnival/state fair type crap.

Agreed.
My son's noticed this.
Uni's a pretender to the throne.
It portrays itself as more hip, and tries to capture the more youthful (not little kid youthful) audience.
It tries to be the places for grown up kids, who've outgrown Disney.
But Disney's got place for grown up kid too.
AK, Epcot, Hollywood Studios, Springs...
To their credit, my kids picked up on the difference right away.
We could barely convince them to go back to Uni for the second day - but we had park tickets, and the hotel was booked - so we went.

Alrighty insiders – Star Wars Celebration starts tomorrow! In an era where nobody can deliver an important announcement without it being leaked first, what's going to be said/shown tomorrow and Friday?

I've read similar accounts on /r/thathappened.

We were surprised how much we enjoyed Universal's two parks. Daigon Alley far exceeded anything Disney has yet to do of course, but I loved MIB far more than Buzz Lightyear and The Mummy was an awesome coaster we did a few times. Popeye and Bluto's Barges blew Kali River Rapids out of the water with how fun the ride was, and Spiderman is of course a great ride. The quality outside of Potter is of course sub-Disney, but the ride designs are actually superior for many attractions. Things might not look as great, but you have more fun as a rider.

I can see being bored if you only did one Universal park per day instead of doing both together.

Living here in California and having never been to USO my main reference point is USH. It's a lot of fun, but something always seems to be missing. It just doesn't appeal to me the way that Disney's parks over the world do. Maybe USO is different.

USO is totally different. Designed first and foremost as theme parks whereas USH is a fully functional studio with some rides tacked on. It is very similar to the DLR with its two adjacent theme parks, a few hotels, and Citywalk all right there. IOA is very much a Magic Kingdom style park and USH is similar to DHS/DCA.

Yes something is missing. Variety. I was really excited to go to USH this past August after about 4 years. Then I rode Tranformers, Simpsons and Despicable Me back to back to back and caught a serious case of simulator/ screen fatigue. Really, I only went for the WWOHP which was great, especially The Three broom sticks restaurant. Probably right behind Blue Bayou for best themed restaurant. Eventhough its counter service and Feels like a Cafeteria. FJ is fun but overrated I think. Not as fun as Jurassic park and the Mummy.

I need to go back to USH.

Yeah, I'm aware of the layout differences and that the Orlando property is a sprawling destination resort. As theme parks go it looks amazing, even better than at least one Disney park I can think of, but I'm skeptical that the overall delivery isn't much different from USH. In other words it's probably not worth a flight to Florida, car rental, and hotel for me to see.

Here is the great thing; it isn't either or; you can enjoy both and frankly Disney and Universal know this. Since they are the two big dogs their parks each help the other. Strong offerings at both USO and WDW makes it easier to justify the huge expense to take your family there.

I love going to theme parks in general; I just find myself spending more time at Disney parks.

There's certainly a difference between Potter and the rest of the park but it's NOT Six Flags. Not even close. I would know as I've been to one.

Oh, and to everyone else, USO doesn't exist. It's either USF (Universal Studios Florida) or UOR (Universal Orlando Resort).

Small pet peeve of mine :)

I can see that, but frankly I'd rather visit South America, Europe, or Southeast Asia instead. I can barely bring myself to drop several thousand for a proper DL trip let alone fly 5 hours to Florida to do basically the same thing. I hope to go back one day, especially to see WoA, but I'm in no rush.

I think you are just getting old and more mature. You would rather travel the world and see real cultures instead of Disneyifed cartoon versions of them. I have to agree with you. Doing Europe and Japan sound a lot more fun and not just because there is a Disney park there. Disney parks are starting to become like McDonald's. Sometimes you just need something a lot more satisfying.

Its weird, Florida parks are all really low on attractions. We were constantly sitting around at Disney World waiting for dinner reservations because we had already done everything a few times.

USO sufferes the same problem, but the parks are built for park hopping. WDW is going to get better for park hopping with the gondolas, but right now it is a pain. USO gave us a more eventful day.

Plus, WDW atrractions all seem really dated technology-wise. Its a give and take. Nothing at Disney marvels the two Potter areas and attractions. But Seuss Landing is god awful. There's a give and take. Universal's rafting ride is a lot more fun, but Disney's is prettier. Universal's Mummy beats Rockin Rollercoaster, but Tough to Be a Bug is miles better than Shrek 4D or Minion Mayhem.
