Welcome to Doc Davis' Magic Elixir Cart! Saving your hunger and thirst with amazing refreshments!

ScreenShot2014-04-22at52952PM_zpsc3fc9d74.png

The Story

This cart travels from one mining town to another, boasting to miners that their elixir can push their luck to win the Goldmine! They've been all over Nature's Wonderland, and now they've settled at Big Thunder! Sick? Tired? Unlucky with TNT? Our Perfect Pear Exilir can fix it all!

Originally, the Doc just served his specialty drinks, but since spending a few years in Thunder Mesa, he's learned how to make amazing recipes to fill the Hungriest Miner!

(And, I'd like to add, this was based off of an Elixir Cart that was supposed to be in Marc Davis famous project, the Western River Expedition

Location

I decided to put this over between Big Thunder Mountain and Frontierland Station (Maybe even acting like a transition peace). With all the kiddos waiting for Woody and Jesse over by the Station, People coming off/on Splash Mountain, Thunder Mountain and Tom Sawyers Island, it seemed like a great place for some food. Plus, it'd be kinda secluded from other food in the park at night, could be neat just to sit down by the Rivers of America and eat.

Really though, it could work over by the "Western City" part in Frontierland though, with it's old-time feel. It could definitely be moved if needed.

You'd really need only two cast members here, maybe 3 during holidays.

Menu Background

I wanted things that could be kept hot (Or cold) on the line easily, and was extremely new, but also something that seemed familiar for guests.

For the main dish I decided to go with Organic Frybead. It's a Native American recipe, and it's really, really good. Like, highly addictive good. It's kinda of like a mix between a puffy taco, honey oat bread, a doughnut and an elephant ear (If you can think of that combination). It can be used for sweet and savory dishes and is extremely versatile. I'm using it almost as a "western" gyro here, stuffing it; or like a Belgium Waffle, holding some amazing ingredients. But, if you just want some with powdered sugar, that's on the menu to.

For Drinks I wanted to do some basic coke products, but with a new disney twist. The Dessert Pear and mojito syrup Elixir is Ramone's Pear of Dice Soda from California Adventure (Which can be served in a Beaker, like the Doofensluper's found at Epcot, but with a new "Magic Elixir" Cart Logo). The Frozen Coca Cola Products were good, I can get one a ton of places, but I thought of the old-time syrups that flavor them. The foams kinda a play on that old school feel, served new. The Slushes can be served in Woody's Roundup Cups that look like one of his boots, with his logo on them. I was thinking about doing Milkshakes, but they wouldn't hold up well for a food cart.

Why in the World I Chose This…

I chose this because I feel like this area needs an awesome food option. It's a great opportunity for guests to sit down and relax or get something on the run. I also felt this was good because of all the traffic around this area. I didn't really want a typical overdone wagon or stagecoach, I wanted something… original.

Mostly I choose something nice for Frotierland because well… I've been living it. For the past several months I've been out West doing Native American Studies at and outside of college. I've practically lived in "Thunder Mesa" setting for months. It's been great and I've learned a ton. I thought it'd be cool to bring what I know to introduce some amazing food to guests. And I'm really addicted to this Frybread recipe my friend gave me right now.

Plus, it's a nice little nod to Western River Expedition and Marc Davis.

One Little Spark...
I'll add, I've made frybread and eaten it many times (though, it's not a tribal traditional food for Cherokee that I recall, still doesn't mean that it didn't take root in tribal culture in Oklahoma. My grandmother made it, my mother made it...).

The recipe is pretty simple, and yes, it is delish!

If anyone is interested, it's:

3 cups AP Flour
1 tbl of baking powder
1 tsp salt
1.5 cups of warm water
Peanut or Vegetable Oil for frying

Blend the dry ingredients together in a bowl and then make an indentation in the middle with your fingers. Think of it like a "bowl" made of the dry ingredients.

Pour in the water and mix with your hands until the dough firms up.

Remove from the bowl and place on a lightly floured counter top and knead the dough for a few minutes.

Place in a bowl, cover with a damp cheese cloth or paper towel, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.

Remove the dough from the fridge. Start to heat a 1/3 inch or so deep pool of the oil in a shallow pan (a large cast iron skillet is what I would use).

Cut and ball the dough into balls about 3 inches in diameter. Roll the dough out to your desired thickness (about 1/2 inch for "tacos", this is something to play with depending on how you are going to use the dough) and spear a hole in the middle with a knife (this keeps it from bubbling up during frying).

Cook in the oil for 1.5 to 2 minutes, then flip and cook for another 1.5 to 2 minutes.

Top with whatever you want!

It's delish. For those who haven't had it, I actually think of it as similar to fresh na'an, but with a texture that's more like a funnel cake.

Oh, and here's a picture (doing Red a favor I guess...but, I wanted to explain what it was because I NEVER expected to see it referenced anywhere like this).

One thing though, this is a FATTY dish. I think the calorie count is something like 700 calories and 30 grams of fat. But, who goes to Disney to count calories? :p

Meh, as far as I know, it was a thing on the old, old reservations down in the Oklahoma area...that they made out of rations given... It makes sense about it being around that area, I'm not sure about Cherokee, other tribes for sure though.... I got an awesome Organic Frybread recipe from a friend:cool:... it's like... amazing.. But yes, it's incredibly fatty, and good. Perfect for Magic Kingdom! :D

My recollection (which could be way wrong, just what I recall) is that it's more popular with the Navaho and the Creeks. So, that means SW United States (namely New Mexico) and the Dakotas. As I recall, when OK was broken into the tribal jurisdiction the Creeks were given jurisdiction right next to the Cherokees in the eastern part of the state.

That being said, my grandmother made it, and my mother made it as well. It's where I learned.

Is it too late to try my hand?
Seeing as how I'm the host I think it's fine. And I'm willing to let people in up to Saturday at 11:59 pm. This first challenge is only for the one bonus point that will go to the winner and is not actually a part of the real challenge. If you would like to participate we would love to have you. You can choose to either submit a proposal for the challenge at hand or you may wait until Sunday to find out your pairing and to learn of the first official challenge. Good luck, have fun, and, as always, if you have any questions feel free to ask.

Teams go up a week from today and the first official challenge goes up then as well. But, just to tide over you early starters I'll put up an individual warm-up challenge just as a teaser. And by the way, winner gets a one point head start on everyone else!

You warm-up challenge is to design a food cart. Yes, a simple, ordinary food cart. But we are imagineers! We can't simply plop a man into an area and tell him to sell food, we must build him an abode and appropriately theme it. For this competition I want:

A location
A backstory/theme (work them together, make it cohesive)
What will be served
And why you chose what you chose

Drawings/pictures are up to you. No more than two though, I really like writing. Oh, and one more thing, keep things realistic. I really like ideas that could be constructed in the real world. This goes for future competitions as well, if I can't see it happening you're going to get marked down. Aside from that word of advice knock yourselves out! Any questions just ask! Later Gators!
Does this have to be in disney world, or can it be in disneyland?

As I said before, all projects, unless explicitly stated otherwise, will be assumed to be placed within the Walt Disney World Resort. But don't worry for all you Disneyland-ians, Universal-philes, and fans of other places to go on vacation, I have some ideas for vacation-challenges if you will!

Alright, thanks for clearing that up. I have a pretty good idea for WDW too, so it's all good

I'm message it to you. I already have it all typed up, as I post these recipes in another thread...

If anyone else wants any of those recipes, just let me know. I just don't want to clutter up and derail this comp thread with them.
