Sports Championships

The NBA Playoffs and the Stanley Cup are approaching so I thought I should bring this up. It's been on my mind for quite some time. I think the major sports should change how their championships are handled. I think they should do away with the Conference Champion vs Conference Champion thing. Hear me out on this. I think the major sports should adopt the system some international games use. I say that the first couple rounds can stay the same but change for the final 4 teams. In the semi-final round, the higher seed of one conference should play the lower seed of the other conference and vice-versa. For example, if this would have happened in this year's NFL Playoffs, the semi-final round would have been Bucs vs Raiders and Eagles vs Titans and the two winnners meeting in the Superbowl. That way, the best two teams end up playing each other in the championship. The "best" teams can be in the same conference or different ones. How many times have we been treated to a poor championship because one conference was weaker than the other? In most cases, the best games seem to happen in the semi-final round. Remember the early to mid 90's, where the 49ers-Cowboys NFC title game was dubbed the "real Superbowl" and the winner would just destroy the AFC team? Not only does this system allow the two best teams to play each other in the championship, it also allows for rivalry championships. Rivalries are held in conferences, there are hardly any rivalries between teams in different conferences. In championships, we are usually treated to teams that know very little about each other. Now can you imagine a championship between heated rivals? How great would a 49ers/Cowboys Superbowl have been? Or a Redwings/Avalanche Stanley Cup? Or a Lakers/Kings NBA Finals? Or a Yankees/Red Sox World Series? I know some would say that they like having two teams from different conferences play each other. I'm not saying that couldn't happen. If the two best teams are in different conferences than that can happen. Of course, there's the argument about there not being any Conference Champions. Who cares? Let me say this, if you are celebrating a Conference Championship after the season, it just means your team lost the big game. A Conference Championship is basically a "loser" title. I'm sorry but it is. Using this system would pit the best teams in the championship, increase the likelihood of rivals meeting for the title, and make it so that any two teams could play for the championship. What do you guys think?

You make for a good argument, but until you pony up the money and BUY a professional sports team, I'm afraid you're not going to get very far with your idea. I do agree though about trying your best to match up the two best teams in the finals of a sport, but we also live for the underdog.

I believe you are pretty much putting each sport into a "march madness" type tournament...(which is the way that football should be anyways)

At the risk of jeopardizing our virtual friendship :animwink: nothing makes me happier in baseball than to see the Yankees beat the Red Sox every year.

*ducks for Freak's mighty blow*

I've always liked the Yankees and have disliked Boston ever since the 75 Series. I wear big chips on my shoulders when it comes to sports teams. But, for your sake Freak, here's hoping they at least win the wild card this year.

*throws a Rocket powered fastball at Scott's head*

*he catches it...throws it up in the air...hits it back to me...*

OH LOOK A ROUTINE GROUND BALL!

*goes through my legs*

DOH! :brick:

Well, since you brought up ground balls through the legs, that is one I still cannot get over in all the sports I have seen. How in the world did that ball get by Buckner? Every time I watch that replay I am amazed, and I'll be amazed 50 years from now. For the record, I did root for the Sox to win that Series--I hate the Mets. The only other way I will root for the Sox to win is if they play the Braves.:hurl:

(that's what I was referring too  )

(Do you know in '86...all of the Boston teams were in it???)

Celts won
Sox blew it because of Buckner
Bruins...let's not get started
Patriots (I believe it was one of the biggest "KILLINGS" in SuperBowl history  (42-6 loss to the Bears))

No, I didn't realize that, but you are absolutely correct. Oh man, being a Laker fan, I strongly remember our battles in the 80's. Magic and Bird--it doesn't get much better than that.

Oh, and the Super Bowl loss was 46-10, not to run salt in a wound though. But at least you've won one now.

yeah yeah yeah... (I got the score wrong because I was just a wee lad back then (talk about hitting below the belt with that one)

(Oh, and the Pats victory in the Super Bowl was really a thing of destiny...just a great show all around...and...the serious underdogs pulled it out!)

No, the march madness tournament is basically the same, winner of one pool vs winner of another, but having 4 pools instead. What I'm referring to is more like the tournamant style from Olympic Hockey, where teams from different pools(or conferences) meet in tournament action before the final.

Well...take football for instance... 32 teams

take the top 16 teams (TOP...no divisional...divisions are only to make the "tournament" and have some "order" )

So if the Patriots, Dolphins, Bills, and Jets are in the top 16...they make it...

Then...based on rank within the league...you put the best against the worst (like seeds) and it's a do or die from then on...

So, in actuality...the SuperBowl could be "Patriots vs. Dolphins"
(Sorry for using this conference, it's just the most I'm familiar with)

I guess it could be something like that. How Olympic Hockey worked was there were two pools of countries. Say Pool A is USA, Russia, Sweden, France, Norway, Belarus and Pool B is Canada, Finland, Japan, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine. Teams would then advance into tournament mode from those pools and be seeded according to round robin play. Then the highers seeds from Pool A would play the lower seeds from Pool B and vice-versa and the tourney would unfold from there.
