I feel like we’re all over the place here. When I say what if Nani wants to study something other than marine biology, then it’s a “slippery slope” and why not change everything about the movie, when the writers add a new plot line, it’s a “small plot point”.

Look, here’s the summary of my views: I think a preponderance of evidence points to the idea that this was a change the filmmakers added intentionally, to highlight a particular perspective on healthy individualism. I don’t think their hand was in any way forced by plot constraints. For one, they were the ones who added the new storyline, and for another, we have the Forbes piece which the director says highlights his views.

I think you have confused a bit of what was said. I didn't say they were forced into this change, that was obviously deliberate. What I said was they were trying to stay within the set conceit of the established universe without making too many changes. Because as discussed if they set for example that Nani would be going to UoH instead of UCSD as part of this new small plot point change as you and a few others suggested that would have required other changes to the story that are larger, such as change of location of the movie, and more impactful to the overall universe.

So they introduce one small change while still keeping the same conceit within the established universe.

Marine biology is relevant because she loves the water.

As I said in another thread, if they had just written it a little differently:

If, because the house was destroyed, all three of them went to go live with the neighbors, and then when it was time for school to start in a couple of months, she went, there would be no issue here.

I mean, there is no issue as far as I’m concerned. But people would not be complaining. It would be just like when any big sister leaves any family to go to college.

I think that makes for a clumsier ending, so they just went with the cleaner version which was having her make the decision to go to school right then.

Who could possibly have a problem with that?

Because that doesn’t create the unnecessary family drama that California does.

Added bonus with UH? Most state universities have lower tuition costs for state residents. By choosing UCSD, Nani will be paying $31,000 extra in tuition each year.

And that’s why I went to Southeastern Louisiana University.
Well that plus it’s the exact same curriculum as LSU, but without the garbage reputation as a football/party campus.

It still doesn't solve the issue of Nani needing to leave home if she is to go to college, as UoH is still 78 miles away from where the movie is set. So whether 78 miles away or 2300 miles away, Nani is still not staying at home while going to college. This has been discussed already in this thread.

She was offered a free ride in San Diego, so that’s a moot point.

I thought it made sense. I never really appreciated just how much Nani gives up for Lilo in the animated film.

In this version, Nani gets to go to school, pursue her dream, get a better job, and still be with Lilo. Its not like she will never see her again. After college, I imagine her right back with Lilo, who will continue to grow older and will one day have her own life.

Where was this internet outrage when Woody abandoned his self-sacrificing morals from the previous THREE movies to abandon his kid so he can have a toy romance with Bo Beep??? Now that deserves outrage.
