That explains who wrote the bad songs. Disney only chose them because Lin Manuel wasn't available for more songs and these two were cheap.

Is Disneyland really going to play "Can I Get a Chee Hoo?" in the esplanade? The song proved the Rock really can't sing.

You keep using "TV series adapted to movie" as if that was an objective detriment to any project. It's not.

Less than a year ago, the “Moana” follow-up was poised to be a streaming series rather than a feature theatrical release. Moving it posed a risk that could have backfired, but Bergman felt the project was worthy of a cinematic bow. In February, the animated sequel relocated from Disney’s Vancouver studio to a production facility on the Burbank lot, with everyone working on an aggressive timeline to keep the Nov. 27 release date. With a renewed emphasis on the theatrical strategy, the studio also reversed course on this year’s “The First Omen” and “Alien: Romulus,” which were intended for streaming.

Adapting a TV series to a movie and having the work outsourced is just as bad as Eisner creating direct to DVD sequels and releasing them theatrically. It cheapens the brand and endangers Burbank's in house artists. I worry for the future of Disney Animated Studios. If they can outsource this for faster and lower budget and still make millions, why do anything in house for more?

How was Moana outsourced if it was worked on at Disney’s studio in Vancouver

Huh, I actually liked this way more than the chatter was prepping me for. A tad reductive; but honestly very enjoyable all the way through. The songs came together well for me. I liked all the side characters and thought they were proper cast members and not fed two lines of dialogue as in Wish.

As far as recent animated sequels go I thought it was better than Frozen 2, Ralph and IO2 by a long shot! Frozen 2 was at least trying to be more original, but missed the mark. Whereas this is clearly trying not too hard to mess with a previously successful story structure.

It really, really does not feel like a flipped TV show to me. Truly, I think people have just decided that it was supposed to feel that way and are looking for evidence that it was formerly.

At the end it doesn’t really matter I guess, the public is embracing it.

Interesting! I preferred it to Frozen 2 (I think) but not the other sequels you mention. Those were all much stronger in my opinion.

I’d have to watch them all again to be fair. I found IO2 to just not be as inventive and novel. Moana 2 (which I know is just as reductive) is a good ole fashion hero’s journey. So it’s hard to expect total reinvention.

There perhaps wasn’t enough true villainy we were promise/mislead into. But the clear third movie seems poised to deliver that promise.

I know this is just the realm of opinion. But I would never even dream of calling this one of the worst WDAS movies… I dunno why but I guess I was braced for a let down and left pleasantly surprised.

Disney released the "We're Back" scene from the movie:

No Islander except Moana's father has tattoos. That wasn't the case in the original film. I guess it's expensive or time consuming to apply the tattoos.

I waited for Disney+ to watch this, and I'm not surprised it hasn't generated much discussion.

It's about as good as I expected for a retooled TV show. The degree to which it was a hit due to the reputation of the original is quite remarkable.

Visually, it looks good. Doesn't feel like any downgrade in that department. The music and story were so-so. It didn't hold my attention well overall.

Just watched it tonight and you basically expressed my sentiment. Thought the new characters were decent but otherwise was mediocre. The songs were a huge step down from the original. Story was pedestrian. I wouldn’t say it was a bad movie or a waste or time but I would have little reason to watch again.

Watched it tonight and thought it was a solid Disney Channel movie with characters I liked, some fun humor and decent adventures, with mid Disney Channel songs. By mid, I'm contrasting them to what they most reminded me of - High School Musical and Descendants - and this wasn't nearly the fun catchiness of those soundtracks. The music was definitely the weak point here as the movie was solidly enjoyable but the songs were SO generic that even Auli'i and Nicole's great singing couldn't redeem them or make them memorable. But it was better than I expected for a recycled product.

Saw it over the weekend. I enjoyed it, but unlike the original, this was a one-and-done movie that I doubt I'll feel the need to revisit. Agree with all the others, the lack of Lin-Manuel Miranda really pulls this movie down compared to the original. The film also kind of drags until Maui and Moana re-unite. At least they didn't make Moana an insufferable Girl Boss, which is where I feared they were headed after the opening scene.

But it made over a billion, so I guess we're getting the sequel the end credits set-up. And if nothing else, the film really made me want to visit Aulani again.
