Maybe I misunderstand what you mean when you say "playing the crowd", as that to me means they are trying to fool the crowd which I don't think is what is happening.

"playing the crowd" -- Just doing stuff to bait responses and engagement... Floating things or responding to fan stuff to keep driving interest and engagement (vs shutting concepts down with no substitute). By engaging and saying its a possibility... all those who are clamoring for tidbits feel acknowledgement and keep pushing onward. It's an a means to keep driving interest in a topic without actually committing to any specific angle at all.

It's a tease - Of course the more interest and buzz they help cultivate - the better the chance for their show to continue.

Marvel has been willing to shutdown fan theories when they aren't accurate after the series are over. For example Jac Shaffer herself, I believe it was her, shutdown all those Mephesto theories from WandaVision quickly after the show was over, she was the writer there too after all.

So this would be a departure for a Marvel writer/director to give details as some "baited response" just for engagement. If she is acknowledging it its because I have to believe its the reality of what they were thinking.

SO, I finally found some time to sit down and watch this. Honestly, I REALLY didn't like it. It felt so slow, and I got bored a great deal during a lot of it. To the point, I have questions, but I genuinely could have missed answers cause I was just tuned out (I can't figure out why she would sacrifice herself, how Billy and Tommy somehow survived but Wanda never knew, how did she get connected with death, etc.). I kind of assumed the Usual Suspects thing was going to occur when he went to his room, so I'm not super surprised by it (it was still kind of a cool twist). But I honestly think that was the worst final episode of any series so far. Had they just added 5 minutes onto the end of episode 8, I wouldn't feel that at all. But an entire 30-40 minutes to get basically nowhere was just too much. Way too much flash backs for me. Not in quanity, but in time. There must have been 3 episodes worth of flashbacks and backstory by the end that just didn't feel needed at all.

Hahn was still amazing in it, and I don't know if I'm just let down because I thought this would be so good, but I just wasn't into this at all. It might be the first series I've really not paid attention to for large stretches while watching.

I can't figure out why she would sacrifice herself

It was a calculated risk, I think somewhat led by her agreement with Death to leave her soul alone and the knowledge that Billy can attach departed souls back to bodies.

how Billy and Tommy somehow survived but Wanda never knew

Tommy didn’t survive. Billy was able to transfer his conscience to another body. I’m not really sure how Wanda would have known or sensed it.

how did she get connected with death, etc.).

Season 2?

He could see tommy in that one scene, couldn't he, and they are going to find him. I thought the idea wsd they were both transfered to other bodies. I don't know, like I said, I struggled a lot with this one, which is a bummer, I really wanted to like it.

The kid he saw drowning was the body Billy was resurrecting Tommy’s soul into. Tommy was dead up until that point. Assuming it worked; the show plays fast with Agatha misdirects.
