BTW, just a quick fact- Did you know that most of the ride takes place in a back building, not the actual "mountain?" And also, if you want to get wet, have the heavier members of the group in the front.

It depends somewhat on what you consider the "mountain," in reality, there is no mountain, only a large facade which covers the otherwise unappealing building which houses the attraction.

Hey skylor good to see you outside of work.

Just to fill some of you folks in, Right now splash mountain has a system that works like a large piece of velcro. It has rubber strips on the bottom of each log, and then if the e-stop, or power disconnect is pressed another strip of rubber is pressed up through an air bag system and they oppose each other and stops the log. Like skylor was saying that it can take a while for a log to stop though.

I havent heard anything from anybody about this magnet sytem but Id believe it. Ill be working splash on friday (one of the days of the rehab) and when I get home, I can fill you all in.

The splash is actually controlled to a large extent by the shape of the front of the logs, and other factors on the track. I wouldnt imagine the splash will be affected much either way. :)

Thanks for the info Skylor, and welcome to WDWMAGIC, glad to see you posting.

The splash from the car or that the crowd outside the ride sees? The splash that the crowd outside sees is actually shot into the air from pipes in the Briar Patch.

I believe what they were trying to say is that the wedge/scoop shape on the front of the log is designed to direct the water that the log displaces on the runout *forward* from the log, and away from the Guests, keeping them from getting TOO wet. The tunnel is also designed to keep Guests from getting too wet from splashback. (I read a story somewhere that on the first incarnation of Splash Mountain out in Disneyland, the tunnel walls were too perfectly smooth and curved, and the splash traveled up the side walls, met in the middle, and then fell straight down onto the log utterly drenching it (and putting quite a lot of water in the bototm of the log). After testing, they had to add some baffles along the runout to disrupt the water splash and keep it from traveling up the walls.

All of this is totally separate from the water cannon "splash" seen coming from the briar patch from outside the attraction. This is strictly there to make it appear from the front that the logs were splashing down into the pond that you see from the bridge, rather than continuing down into the tunnel. And add in a third water cannon that sprays out to the bridge every third log, unless it's too cold out.

Just an update on this. Not sure where the magnetic brake rumor came from, but that one is a wild rumor to say the least! All that is happening are some motor and belt changes following the regular hours, and punishing EMH extra wear and tear. Nothing else will be done, no painting, no animatronics, no prototype braking systems. Its purely back of house mechanical stuff, that guests wont notice once it reopens.

Thanks Steve....I never really bought the "magnetic break" rumor....didn't make a whole lot of sense.

Thanks, I thought that magnetic break sounded a little odd...

As you all know, Splash Mountain will be down the 17th and 18th of November. The reason being, They will be testing and if all goes right, installing a new magnetic brake for drop 4 (The main 52ft drop you see). Apparently, if the E-Stop is pressed while the log is falling, the log does not stop until the ending stretch (Which they know it takes that long, but for improved safety they want to try to slow it down as much as possible). So let's say some guest decides to randomly go into the underground briar patch tunnel, they wont (more than likely) be squashed by the log. (Or whatever story you'd like to come up with.)

Yesterday (Thursday, November 10th) Disney was doing some E-stop testing, so I figure the 17th-18th will be the days they will be installing the new system.

I don't think they will be slowing down the logs any (Which could make an even more intense drop!), because they need to get those logs down and out of drop 4 as soon as possible so the next log can go, So they don't cascade.

Anyways. 1st post. Yay!
(FYI: I'm no newbie, I've been reading these forums for about a year now. I've seen everything. haha)

I'd like to welcome you to the boards too. but um... you've been watching us... scarrreyyyy.... lol :lookaroun

I was there working yesterday an they actually did alot. There was some painting in the station done, and some concrete work dont through out the ride. So if they had to re concrete stuff, theres a good chance that It has to be painted unless it isnt noticable to guest. I was actually told that they rehab might be extended until today (11/19) . They did some pressure washing of the que area, and they changed most of all the belts and motors. Thats just the update that I can tell you from what I saw with my own eyes.

Maximize The Splash at "Splashdown"

Are all splashes the same at Splashdown? Do some logs get wetter than others? I could've sworn that when I was on Splash Mountain a couple of years ago that the splash soaked the entire boat! I remember seeing the water come up and over everyone! Obviously, I wasn't seeing this as everyone on the boat was equally soaked as I was....definitely made for a great time! Even though the people on the boat weren't family, we all wound up going back on it again! :)

Why does it feel like somebody's watching me? ;) (if we have any 80s children on this board, you'll know what song this is from) ;)
