Some interesting trivia from the Haunted Mansion, straight from the source, the Imagineers.

The ghosts are actually in the ballroom and ARE animatrionics, but are translucent thanks to Pepper's Ghost, an old magic trick that makes things seem invisible.

Also, Disney Imagineers designed the ghosts so that woman was leading the man, because due to the mirrors involving Pepper's Ghost it would seem like the woman was leading the man when the people were on the ride.
To correct this, they made the woman lead so that with the mirrors, it would be reversed.

Actually, the Imagineers made the mistake. The animatronics were built with the men leading, but when the image is reversed, as it is in the final effect, the women were now leading. (In a dancing couple, the person leading leads with their left arm outstretched.)

Doubtful. It's not a major problem, so they probably won't spend the money. Besides, perhaps the women lead the men while dancing in the spirit world. :animwink:
