Spiderman negotiations could bring him back under the creative direction of Marvel.

I have to think X-Men is not far behind.
I think the x-men movies won't go anywhere for a while. The difference with spiderman is the last 2 x-men movies were awesome, not so much with spidey. Could this deal with Sony open the door to maybe some cameos and small parts for some x-men in the MCU? Yea I think it could. If the integration goes well, I can't see fox not at least considering it.

part of me thinks they knew they would get Spidey all along.
I agree, I think they probably had a plan with and then without him in case things never worked out. I think this could be a really good thing as long as Disney/Marvel have the last say and control with the films.

I don't think there will be any cameos from the X-Men in the MCU. Fox and Marvel haven't been playing well together lately. Marvel has cancelled the Fantastic Four comic and refuses to push the X-Men outside of the comics.

I do wish there was a way that Andrew Garfield could still be Spider-Man though. I did hear that Marvel was interested in casting him for a different role in the future.

Wouldn't be surprised; they tapped Evans to be Cap, and he already quite a bit of comic book films under his belt at that point.

Eh... I don't know. While Feige and Marvel Studios will be listed as co-producers, all the sources I've read indicate that Sony will still have final creative say over the Spidey films, which doesn't fill me with a lot of confidence. The conspiracy theorist tells me that this is a Trojan Horse to sink Marvel's films. Sony makes a terrible Spidey film again, blames Marvel, and since he's now in the MCU, the over films get some of the taint.

On the surface, I would tend to agree that it appears that the setup could still lead to problems with the character, but I completely trust Feige and Marvel to have checks & balances in place to prevent that from happening. I don't think they'd agree to a deal that would leave them open to having a poor Spider-Man film weighing them down.

The FF cancellation is a gimmick; the timing is certainly suspect, but the FF will be back in comic form in a year at most.

Whats appealing is, the whole MCU series of films has been tightly fine tuned from the get go so part of me thinks they knew they would get Spidey all along. I have to think X-Men is not far behind. Jackman with Downey is an easy billion.

I've seen some griping about how the pushed back MCU films will interfere with whatever plots Feige and company have planned, but I strongly suspect they had specific plots laid out exactly for the contingency of Spider-Man coming back. And same goes with the Spidey solo film -- Marvel probably already has a screenplay all prepared and ready to go for a 2017 film.

I agree, thats why I don't think that they will go anywhere for a long time. But things can change. Companies tend to change their attitude when big cash is on the line. They also LOVE to copy what others are doing so if this spiderman agreement ends up making big $$$$ for Sony, Fox would be foolish not to at least consider it.

Because the pinnacle of X-Men cartoons was the one from the 90s and no reboot since has even come close to being as awesome?

While that is true they have never gone this long without making a new one. Usually there has only been a 3 or 4 year gap. Its been 6 year already with nothing coming up in the near future. Other than Wolverine do any X-Men characters even show up in Marvel's other cartoons?

Does Ka-Zar fall under the X-license? He originated in the X-books, and he's shown up in the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon.

I don't think so. According to Wikipedia there were two Ka-Zars. The first one originated in the 1930's and the second one debuted in X-Men #10.

I never read comics so half of this conversation is way above my head. But wouldn't this new deal make it tougher for Spiderman film rights come back to Marvel?

Disney already traded the film rights for the associated merchandise rights. Sony is basically licensing Spider-Man back to Marvel. It's easy money.

Honestly I think this is all about managing release dates and injecting quality control for Marvel/Disney and Sony hitching their success to Marvel's wagon.

Folks have started to talk about Superhero Fatigue in a way that becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy and with Sony preparing to liter a bunch of 2nd rate Spidey flicks onto the market while Disney/Marvel were executing their plans would have hurt the larger Marvel franchise. Adding Kevin Feige into the mix to help with quality control and integration as well as incorporating Spidey's release dates into the Marvel movie plan is key to protecting Marvel's assets. For Sony, this is easy. They get to piggy back on the Avengers success for their Spidey movies and get a franchise halo / box office success.

It has long been discussed that Marvel had the right to perform script edits and help target release dates for Sony and Fox's movies, but that they were refusing to participate after Iron Man. I would love to know if that was Ike's doing or something else.

On the business side this makes less sense for Sony, Spider-Man movies have a limited profit potential given that Marvel still owns all of the merchandising rights. Disney is the clear winner on this one.

I would guess it is Ike's doing. I remember hearing that he was livid when he found out Fox would negotiate the return of X-Men and Fantastic Four to Marvel. Supposedly that is the reason that they cancelled the Fantastic Four comic and put a stop to anyone creating new X-Men.

It's also been pointed out that this deal might allow for characters that would otherwise be off-limits to Sony to make appearances in Spider-Man films, like SHIELD, Ben Urich, and most notably Spider-Woman.

I'm hoping for Spider-Man/Daredevil and Spider-Man/Blade vs Morbius the Living Vampire.
