Last time I was there, you were able to rent from the Contemporary. If not, the Polynesian and the Grand Floridian have the boats there.

They're not all that speedy. They are cute little 2 person boats you and rent to zip around Bay Lake (when staying at the Contemporary) or Seven Seas Lagoon (when staying at the GF or Poly). We rent them every year. We have driven a boat over the water bridge from Bay Lake to Seven Seas Lagoon though on a couple occasions were told by the Disney Coast Guard-type people to take our boat back to the original area. The boats used to be color coded so they knew which resort they came from. There are also bigger boats you can rent like a pontoon type. You can also water ski and parasail at the Contemporary.

You can rent the boats from the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, Contemporary and Wilderness Lodge, you can take these anywhere in the seven seas lagoon and bay lake apart from the water ski area near the contemporary. You are allowed to cross the water bridge as much as you would like but the boat has to be returned to the same resort that you collected it from.

ahhh, the water mice are so fun. well, if memory serves. my last time to ride was in '94. try to get your own.... 2 people weigh you down, slows boat, decreases enjoyment

All the rentals have the same motor

My wife and I spend an afternoon on the lakes last spring. My though had been to rent a pair of water sprites, but her stated concern was that that would be more expensive than taking out one of the small Boston Whalers instead. So we went with the whaler. We managed to go pretty much everywhere we wanted on both lakes in an hour (we rented from the Wilderness Lodge), but the boat felt slow. It was disconcerting to watch the little sprites do laps around the islands in the middle of the lagoon and pass me several times.

It turns out that the whalers and the sprites both use the same engine, and the whaler being a much larger boat, this can dramatically affect the speed.

[[ Of course, it also turns out that my wife didn't want to drive a boat, and wanted to spend the whole time sunbathing at the nose rather than sit in a seat, so that part turned out just fine -- I got to take some of the best scenery around the lakes with me ]]

Exactly! I read Nansafan's post and thought, "Huh??" Disney couldn't care less if you drive it over the water bridge. We do it every time and that's part of the fun of renting from any of those resorts.
