Speech Topic Help!

As if my week couldn't get any busier, I have to come up with a topic for a persuasive speech! The topic must be controversial and be of interest to the class (college level). I really have no clue on what I should do it on. Any suggestions???

Here's some controversial subjects:

How about how colleges are scheduling Micheal Moore to come speak and then cancelling at the last minute?

How about the fact that Preident Bush has extended the National Guards tour of duty in Iraq? Those that are scheduled to come home are being asked to stay longer.

How about how the current administration let the automatic weapons ban expire?

How about the great struggle between the recording industry and downloading?

the draft is pretty timely these days--should we have one? is a volunteer army better qualified? is it fair to make the National Guard our "backdoor army"?

welfare reform that puts a time limit on how long benefits run, then requires recipients to get a job

stem cell research

perscription drug prices; being able to get drugs from Canada; Rx insurance

Native Americans as school mascots

homes associations that restrict numbers and types of bushes, forbid clotheslines, require all vehicles to be in a garage (no campers parked in the driveway), dictate what colors of paint can be used on exteriors, etc.

Dress codes or uniforms in public schools

legalization of medical marijuana; use of heroin to control pain in terminal patients

presidential term limits

day care vs. at-home mommie (or daddy)

who gets the organ transplant (the 50 year old alcoholic or the 26 year old mother of toddlers)

Should inmates get organ transplants, heart by-pass, plastic surgery, etc?

Should obesity be considered a disability? Can an obese person who is fired sue for discrimination?

Many schools have soda vending machines. In many cases, Coke or Pepsi have paid the school for machine placement, or offered a cut of the profits, donated a scoreboard, etc. In this day of school budget cuts, districts feel they must take the money and hope for the best.

PETA--do they have a point, or are they so radical that no one pays serious attention to them?

the futility of pretending that college athletes are amateurs

Hope that helps.

Considering the recent death of Christopher Reeves, stem cell research would probably be a good one.

The RIAA situation would also be an interesting one.

You could also discuss the FCC and their massively strict rulings regarding live televised broadcast.

Abortion Rights vs. rape, insest etc?
Gay marriage legalization?
Fathers sharing custody vs. the old 'children should be with their mother'?
stem cell research?
can a democracy exist in a religious based country?
welfare reform? do citizens have the right to produce as many children as possible, while relying on welfare to subsidize the household?

When I did speech in high school I took on my teacher with the task she gave me...after my first speech (on Disney) and then my second, she asked if I'd be able to make each speech on Disney...which some were VERY difficult to put to content, but alas, I was the first person to ever do one subject for each speech and remain constant at it. Maybe you can do something Disney related in your speech. Once you choose it, let us know and we'll continue to help you out. Good luck on this!

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I ended up choosing music ratings. Sort of based off of movie ratings. Get it? I'm sort of upset I had to choose something "controversial" and based off of audience interest this time around. :( The class is going to be shocked! My last 2 speeches were, of course, on WDW!

 My first speech, a narrative speech, I did on Test Track and all the people I came across. The second one, imformative, I did was about how learning was entertaining at Epcot. I warned the class on the first day that most of my speeches would have something to do with Disney. :D
