Or maybe it's because they eat too much. Or maybe its because the parents don't have half a brain to feed them properly. Those who claim they don't know that junk food contains artificial fat and other "stuff" that is bad for you, are LIARS. DOn't bother trying to support this lawsuit with ridiculous false logic.

The major problem about this lawsuit is that it was filed in Merin (spelling?) county. Which has one of the biggest anti-big-business group of judges on their board. So I think there is a good chance of this passing, even though it is stupid. I think in America we should go back to the good old ways where the companies arent to blame for something frivolous, like obesity among kids, but the parents be blamed. Why does the government and big-business have to always take the blame? People have free-will and choose to do what they want, the businesses and the government dont decide for them.

You nailed it! You're absolutely right... my kids eat oreos, and a various assortment of other junk foods... but maybe two or three (unless they are at their grandparent's house!) You have to keep in mind that moderation really does make all the difference. Did you know that too much iron is toxic? So perhaps we should file a lawsuit against vitamin makers for marketing potentially hazardous products. It's all silly... people need to stop looking for somebody to blame and start taking responsibility for themselves.

My mother and I had this exact discussion today on the way to driving her and my father to the airport. People today do not know how to practice moderation. It appears as though we are all gluttons. But those filing this lawsuit are just complete and utter MORONS in my opinion. Are they trying to ruin every part of our society? I know smoking is wrong, but it is someones own conscious decision whether or not to do so. So what happens? Well in a state like michigan, there is a cigarette tax on top of the sales tax, on top of the over 6 dollar a pack price! Now i don't smoke but this is ridiculous. Why not sue pasta makers over the chance that someone may choke on a spaghetti noodel? Why not sue Beverage companies like pepsi, for the fact that we are introducing carbonation into our systems via their product. I don't know how everyone else feels, but to me, this is all complete and utter bull $h!te....TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN ACTIONS INSTEAD OF ALWAYS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO BLAME! GEEZE....sorry for going off on a rant...my bad

Weak, very weak. Parents don't know how to feed their kids or tell their kids "no" when they want something. Obese children, 99 times out of 100, are obese because of their parents inability to control the child.

My concern is that way back in 1999, the U.S. FDA (Food & Drug Administration) stated that trans fat labeling was a top priority for them. The idea was simply that people should be able to see the amount of trans fats in the product. Most ready-to-eat breakfast cereals contain 0.05-0.5 gm of trans fats. These are the same cereals that most parents consider to be perfectly healthy. Yet today, trans fat labels are not required. All things in moderation is a great idea and I too attempt to live up to that ideal.

Once again, I do not consider this lawsuit to be at all frivolous nor do Frito-Lay or McDonald's. Check out the following link for details:

Wrong example, Dan. Cigarettes are kind of the exception here. If somebody eats two bags of Oreos, nobody else gets hurt. When people smoke cigarettes, everybody around them is affected. If other people around me smoking did not make me cough, and did not trigger my son's asthma and smoke allergy, and did not damage our lungs, maybe I'd have a different opinion. I'm fat, I admit it. I overeat. But the fact that I eat too much doesn't cause physical illness in others. (Unless I'm eating peanut butter around someone with a nut allergy, but that's yet ANOTHER whole different story.)

I'm not even going to click that link...mostly because I suspsect that it's filled with half-truths and propoganda.

Fact is that people refuse to take the consequences for what they brought upon themselves.

You can't honestly tell me that ANYONE has ever thought that a bag of double-stuff oreos constitutes a healthy meal. People know they aren't healthy. They just want a quick buck when they can't constrain themselves. They refuse to accept the fact that they are out of control and will look to blame whomever they can - as long as its not themselves.

You're telling me that parents arent' aware that junk food is bad for them? Even with out these fats, there is a crapload of other junk that will send them on a one-way ticket to fat camp.

I always have, and always will think for MYSELF. That's the problem with a lot of other people. They allow a one-sided argument to get into their head, and then they refuse to look at facts....just excuses.

I agree with you. Ignorance never settles a question. The more information one has, the better. Even propoganda can be useful information. While I could provide some definitive links to the FDA website on this subject I encourage you to do some research on your own and see what you find out on your own.

Well I'll tell you this...even if they do win...it won't solve anything or change anything. Oreos and other foods will continue to be bad for you if they change them. Why not sue everything that's bad for you. Coffee stains your teeth...I should sue foldgers....

Like I said...bad parents that take no responsibility. Time to grow up and act like adults.

I totally agree that people ought to be responsible for their own actions. Also, I agree that parents should teach their children good eating habits. However, trans fat has been called the "stealth fat" by Consumers Reports because the FDA does not mandate a requirement to show trans fat in the normal nutrition facts label on food packages. So, if you as a consumer don't know which products contain trans fat, then how can you avoid it? I think the more we know about trans fat, the better. Here's a link that might be useful:

LAWSUIT UPDATE:

A lawsuit seeking to ban Kraft Foods from selling Oreos to children because the chocolate-cream cookies are allegedly unhealthy will be dropped, the San Francisco lawyer who filed the suit said Wednesday.

Stephen Joseph's suit alleged that Oreos are unhealthy because they contain trans fat, which the National Academy of Sciences has linked to heart disease.

Joseph said he will drop his lawsuit because he has learned that Kraft is working on ways to reduce trans fat in Oreos.

Thanks for the update sandjhooker! That's great news. It's good to know that Kraft Foods is joining with other food industry giants in attempting to eliminate and/or reduce this health risk.
