Not sure what constitutes a "dimple" in your mind, but here is some info that I found using google:

Epcot Facts
Spaceship Earth is a geodesic sphere, standing at 180 feet tall & 165 feet in diameter, & weighing an estimated 16 million pounds. There are 11,324 silvered facets on 954 triangular panels covering the globe. The exterior tiles are made of Alucobond material, a composite of ethylene plastic which has been chemically bonded between two aluminum panels. This material can withstand the Florida climate and is self - cleaning. Rainwater is channeled through the structure and sent to underground drains, where it replenishes the World Showcase Lagoon. It has an outside surface of 150,000 square feet.

well, 11,324 silver triangles, 3 sides, each side shares a side with its neighbor, so if my thinking is correct, you have one triangle, you have 3 dimples, take 2 triangles, you have 4 dimples including the corners, 3 triangles you have 6 dimples including corners, etc. etc, so id say multiply by 3

my answer is 33,972.

but i dont think that sounds right. to early in the morning for this kind of math problem. lol

33,972 is what I came up with also. 11,324 x 3= 33,972.

Well, I was going to try to do the math this morning, but had to run off... I wasn't sure what was meant by "dimple" though, I was taking it to be a recess in the sphere - in which case there are fewer "dimples" than there are panels, as one "dimple" is shared by multiple panels. (And there is also the [to be consistent] "pimple" in the middle of the combined triangular shape.)

well, if you are going to count the point in the panel (the top of the pyramid, if you will) then add 11,324 because that is how many panels there are.

i have an idea. get disney to allow me to get my climbing gear on top of the sphere, and ill count each and everyone of them (as long as everybody helps pitch in for the gas money)

by doing so that means id have to quit my job. i need a paycheck.

my life is wonder after five and before eight. full of love, laughter and no forums.

my job is like the guy in office space. "yehhhhh, ummmmm" minus the freak with the stapler complex.:brick:

There are the same number of dimples as there are triangular panels. Each triangle mag have three points however they are all shared with other triangles. For this reason only one one dimple can be allotted to each panel, Therefore there are 11,324 dimples on Spaceshp Earth

"aahhhh, very good daniel son" "you very wise in problem."

it is one of those questions you over think................. thus you give the wrong answer.

lol...I was just going to say that! You are correct :)

I actually just rethought this...the correct answer is 5662 :) If you look at this picture: Spaceship Earth , you will notice that each "dimple" is actually shared by 6 triangles, so we must divide the number of panels by 2 to get the correct answer, 5662.

There is nothing wrong with a little math...it's my minor! (Neuroscience is better than math, though ;))

Yep! That's what I was thinking too... I'm sticking with 5662 dimples.

I guess it depends on what you are considering the triangle. The three dimensional ones? Or the three individual ones that make up the larger ones? Because if you count THOSE ones, then each dimple is shared by 12 triangels. :lookaroun
