Planes that follow along behind other aircraft, be it things like the space shuttle or experimental craft are known as chase planes. They can take readings, make observations about a given function of an vehicle, and/or spot structural problems/failures. They don't fly around "hot" protecting the vehicle. Maybe only Air Force One warrants that kind of escort.

I'm sad that the politicians are letting the space program go downhill. I remember watching on television as Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon (I was 6 at the time). When you think of what they accomplished with the technology they had at the time, it's just amazing.

It's just really unfortunate that Washington fails to see any real benefit/value in the space program these days.

I think people really take for granted how many of the things that we use in our day to day life that were all a direct result of the space program. Yeah ... it really is a funeral.
