Ok, I am going to FL the last week in December to visit family and we are going to go to WDW. I've only been on Space Mountain once, so I would like it to be open when we go there! Does anyone have any info on when it is closing or how long it is expected to be closed? Thanks.

Are you talking about the MAJOR rehab that's SUPPOSED to happen to Space Mt.? I don't believe any set time has been set on this.

I was in WDW back in February and it was down for a couple of weeks. I have not heard of any other interruptions since then.

What are they doing to the ride anyway? I hope it is nothing too drastic. It is a great ride even after 22 years!

NOT A CHANCE

There is NO WAY that Disney would schedule a REHAB THAT INVOLVES CLOSING THE RIDE during the CHRISTMAS/NEW YEAR'S WEEK.

Disney isn't that stupid.

The only way it might be closed is if something drastic happens and causes major safety issues. The chance of that happening is SLIM.

The main site reported (I think) that it will close in late 2002 for a rahab.

It hasn't been the same for 22 years. Although this will be my fourth time there, I've only ridden it once because the first time I was too young, and the second time in 1991 it was closed for a big rehab. So it did get one back in 1991 with track modifications, new cars, etc. But it has been 11 years, I guess they think it is time to update it again. But now that I read it again, it is still in the rumor stage. Hopefully the date won't be in December.

"20 April 2002: Space Mountain Changes??"

"I have heard quite a few rumors circulating that Space Mountain may be in for a fairly major rehab at the end of 2002. Info from within Disney indicates possible changes to include new designs on the inside wall of the attraction, a new queue line system, and a possible rerouting of the track. (thanks Greg)"

It was only down for 4 days.

Unfortunately, this period included Valentine's Day.

From what I understand from another cast member, the rehab is coming because of a change in sponsors. Fed Ex is pulling out and Samsung is coming in. I can believe this, because I've been hearing all along that when Fed Ex's contract was up, that they would not be renewing their sponsorship. So all the Fed Ex stuff in the post-show and pre-show will have to be pulled.

Keep in mind, I've by no means confirmed this.

Space Mountain is fun...but...THEY NEED TO UPDATE IT!

Granted WDW does not want to have cheesy looking steel structures up (rollercoasters) all over their parks...so, why not REHAB the coasters they HAVE to make them as thrilling as their competitors. I mean, this is SPACE MOUNTAIN...when kids hear this name, it sends chills down their spine with fear! Nowadays, kids go on this and don't have a care in the world that it's a rollercoaster in the dark. ADD A LAUNCH!!!...(blastoff)...(blue tube)...add some inversions...keep the same 2 car per train setup though!!! DO THE SAME WITH BTMR...(make it more thrilling and "rickety" at the same time).

I agree, It needs to be updated. But not to resemble the one in disneyland or disneyland paris. That's what i like about the different SM's , they are all different from the next

Why don't they flip the train around so that you ride backwards through Thunder Mountain? They did this to the Indiana Jones coaster, which apparently made it that much more popular. It would definitely fit the "runaway mining train" theme.

I don't know...I think SM would be great if it were redone to be a clone of the one in Discoveryland at Paris. The Jule's Verne-esque theme would fit in well with the "future that never was" theme of MK's Tomorrowland. And besides New Tomorrowland is modeled after Discoveryland so...I think it would all fit well. The only question would be the Contemporary's sight-line to Tomorrowland/SM if it were changed to be a clone of the french version...

I don't think any of the parks will change there SM to Pair's. It was rumored for DL's 50th, but if you think about it, its just not possible. If they were going to change them it would require them to completely tear down SM because they would have to build the new track which requires cranes and would be impossible if they decided to keep up the building. If anything changes, it will be a long time from now!
