Space Mt. feeling

Our family has a fun Space Mt. memory. Christmas trip of 1998, we were riding Space and having fun waving our arms back and forth going "heeey, hoooo" (we weren't bothering anyone, we had the cars to ourselves). As we got off we were laughing and screaming and the CM said that we had such a good time, we should get a chance to ride again. He took us down a hallway and to the front of the line and had us stand in front of everybody in line. Then he said that if we wanted to ride again, we would have to dance for the people. We danced, the people laughed, pointed, cheered and jeered, and we got to ride Space again without having to wait in line. This was a big deal since this was before the existance of FP and the queue area was jammed with people in all of the weaves.
Ha! How cruel, but I would rather dance than wait in an hour line. :p

Grizz, we didn't have to dance too long thankfully. Without any music to dance too, we were all doing are "own thing" which showcased our complete lack of rhythm. I'd have been happy to dance Swan Lake at that point if it meant no line waiting.

My wife hates roller coasters and she liked that one for some reason. She went on it 3x in a row and loved it. I like it as well.

The feeling I get from Space Mtn. .....anger.
Anger that the once proud icon of Disney thrills and excitement has become an aging, rough, bumpy, slow, dirty, dated, sad excuse for a Disney coaster.
Sorry, that's just how I feel. I've been on almost every Disney coaster in existence, and Space Mountain at WDW is probably my least favorite.

They can do SO much better. :fork:
I agree!!! I was so mad the last time I rode Space Mt. (I was like how can this be...I'm having a conversation with others while on a coaster...this is not thrilling)...I haven't been on Space Mt. in two years...

Bring on an even better version...even better than the one at DLP...launch, loops and all...

I just love walking slowly in the queue line and listening to the Tunnel Music. Quite possibly the absolute best music ever, IMHO. :sohappy: I remember it from when I was probably 18, and rode SM 18 times in a row (ride, get off, get back in line, repeat). And it's stuck with me ever since. I even like it when riding the TTA, and you get a little taste of it, right as it gets dark when you enter SM.... Oh... the memories... so fresh, so sweet. :)

this is the one ride I'm on disagreement with the majority. I agree with Lee. I think space Mountain is the most over-rated attraction in all of Disney. To me it is nothing but a bumpy ride in the dark. Could be cause I had a fear of coasters till I was older..thus I did'nt ride it when I went to disney as a kid. I don't get that nostalgic feeling that everyone else does.

In fact when I go down in October I may discourage my girlfriend from riding this. She has a fear of heights. At the same time I am hoping she might wanna try Rock and Roller Coaster...the only other ride I am going to discourage is ToT. Despite being a fantastic ride..I don't think that is one for someone with a height phobia.

If there wasn't that nostalgic old Tomorrowland theme at the beginning of the queue, as well as that music in the entrance and tunnel, I don't think I'd care so much for the coaster itself. It's not exactly state-of-the-art. But because of the theme, much like other Disney attractions, I became very attached to the way that ride is. :)

I totally get nervous before my favorite rides, Space Mnt. included. I think it all part of the anticipation. I actually start yawning as i'm in the line...not sure why exactly i do it, it must look funny to others waiting in the queue. But every single ride i love, i get nevous/anxious before it. My finace makes fun of me. When we were in line waiting for RnR, I was jittery and he looked over and yawned, which triggered me. Its so wierd! But i actually look foward to that anticipation before the train pulls into the loading area...just want to get on that ride so badly!

Space Mountain is a classic rollercoaster and I love every part of it. It may be old, but it is very fun. I even have the whole track layout memorized. The line definitly adds to it and I hope the next post-show will be as good as the previous ones.

To think, when Space Mountain opened, the only looping coaster in the world was in Knotts Berry farm. Back then, all the coaster were either Rennesance Woodies, mine rides, and that's it.

I really love the queue music a lot too!!! I think it just builds up the aticipation... I think being in line for that long in "outer space" and thinking about the ride builds that anticipation....I really don't like waiting in line for the ride but if i didn't wait in line i don't think the anticipation would be as exciting because it would come so fast and be over so soon... Do you guys know what i mean?

BTW do you guess wave at the people about to blast off in S. mt.? through the glass window? we all ways do that too the people and they wave back like their gonna die!!and thent they blast off! It builds a lot of excitment in me too, to wave at them that is,just thinking that I will shortly be there in about 15 minutes! AHHHH CAN'T WAIT!!! 9 days!!

BTW thanks a lot for all the responses!! I really think Space mountain is the best ride in Disney but I do agree that maybe they should update the ride a bit.... But not completely! Lets not forget it is a classic!

There is something about Space that gets me. Maybe it's because that padded T comes down in between your legs and there really isn't much to hold on to. Anyway, while I try to overcome my fear of falling, I try to ride as many drop rides as I can to show myself that the physics have been worked out and I don't have to worry about falling out. (Funny thing is that I don't mind the heights so much, it's just drops that freak me out - Ferris wheels I am fine with!)

As a child when I rode Space Mountain, they did not have the same restraints. You had a lap belt and just little metal handles in the sides of the rockets to hold onto. Slippery metal handles from my hands pouring with sweat. The entire time as you are getting ready for launch, I would keep wiping my sweating hands on my shorts legs and then grab the handles, only to repeat this process until we hit 1. Which ever parent I was riding with would keep telling me to stop the whole way up, but I could not help it. I was a chicken. Then the entire trip I would scream for them to let me off. It was bad. Only to have my other parent and my younger sister having a blast in the seat in front of us laughing at me. My older sister was the bravest and would ride alone. It helped that she is blind as a bat and would have to take off her glasses for the ride. Yeah, I was the family embarassement when it came to thrill rides as a kid.

GOOD LORD...SPACE MOUNTAIN! Probably holds the funniest memory of WDW for me. I was young and hated roller-coasters (still do though). My mother asked me before we get in line "Honey, do you need to use the bathroom?" I said no and we went through the line got in the car and rode SM. Keep in mind I HATE (with a firey burning fear) ROLLERCOASTERS! After the ride I look up at my mom and say "Mommy, I need to go the bathroom now." They thought it was hilarious, but I almost didn't make the short walk to the bathroom. I will never ride it again, but hey, i did do it once, so I'm good on my SM qouta for LIFE!
