While i know that this is a WDW site, i need some help on Disneyland and was hoping y'all could help. Does anyone know when Space Mountain will be opening in Disneyland? We are planning a trip and don not want to go if it is not open. If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

While an official date has not been announced, it has been rumored that it will reopen on July 17th, 2005, the day of Disneyland's 50th birthday.

Space Mountain will re-open for disneyland's 50th. I would suggest calling (714) 520-5060 for more info. or write to disneyland resort through the website.

They are going through a very detailed rehab..
New track
new musical score
new ride cars.

(By new track I mean replacing the track, not as in a new layout)

Actually, according to "offical" schedules, Space Mountain will not reopen until November, 2005.

There are rumors that it will actually be ready beforehand (by the actual 50th), but those are just that - rumors.

What exactly does that mean? and happy 1,000th post
I didn't even realize I had hit the big 1K!!!

Anyway, they are setting up the new Space Mouontain so that when the sun goes down the soundtrack will change and lights will begin to run in a different pattern then normal. It will essentially turn Space into a form of Rockin Roller Coaster.

As painful as it will be to say goodbye to SSE and see a new version of POTC any major changes to space mountain WDW would call for me being chained to the front entrance. That is one classic that should never, ever change. Even the rediculous walk (or stand) out of the ride.

The changes to SM aren't as drastic as you may think

The ride is basically being rebuilt from the ground up. All of the tracks, supports, cars, scenery has been ripped out and will be replaced with new tracks, cars, scenery, etc. The ride's layout should be exactly the same, except that it will look modern instead of dated.

Everything else you may have heard should be considered a rumor. People have hinted at changes (launched lift, different soundtracks, etc), but nothing has been verified. There are plenty of rumors out there, but the only thing that's confirmed is what I mentioned above (as per an interview with Barry Braverman)

My hope, as well as some others who actually have some say in the matter, is that the new Space Mtn. at Disneyland will be a huge hit.
If it is, chances drastically improve that WDW's horrible, terrible, embarassing, sorry excuse for a Mountain can receive a makeover of it's own.

At Disneyland, the official line is November of next year.
For me, that is hard to believe. As of a couple of weeks ago, most of the track was in the mountain, with total installation of the track expected no later than early Sept.
I just don't see how they are going to need 13 months to test/adjust the ride system and effects. Unless....it is ready on 7/17, but they sit on it as incentive to lure guests back during the fall.

Perhaps they will simply soft open it in July and have a grand opening in time for the fall, to attract guests? Being that the entire queue is being designed by the Imagineers that themed Mission: SPACE, perhaps it'll follow the same kind of opening schedule. This is entirely speculation, of course.

It would make a nice surprise birthday present, though.

congrats lee. well done my boy, well done.

ok, quick question............... i remember seeing/ reading that they covered the old brownish color of SM/DL with this white wallpaper like stuff instead of painting it. is it going to stay this original white or are they going to do something funky with the paint. havent check into that lately and since the thread was started, perfect opportunity.

Last I heard it was staying white.
Supposedly the white covering is highly resistant to fading and weather, and is therefore expected to last quite a while.
Apparently there are some cool lighting packages being cooked up for the mountain.

In a somewhat related note...they recently finished the exterior refurbish on Disneyland Paris' Space Mountain. THAT'S what a Space Mountain should look like!
