Space Mountain

I am extremely chicken I am afraid and scared of all but the kiddie rollercoasters! I have decided that it is time I addressed this and tried at least one during our forthcoming trip! What about Space Mountain, I have read it only travels at 25mph and I think that might be a good place to start?
What is it really like, I'd be grateful fo any advice!

Hi misti

Space Mountain is a great roller-coaster to start off with, in my opinion! :D
The 'space rockets' that you sit in during the ride have 3 seats in them - one in front on the other. There are no big drops or loops, and even though you are in the dark for most of the ride, you're not in complete darkness. It is a little bit bumpy, but which roller-coaster isn't? :animwink:

Like I always say to my 'chicken' family members - Try it, if you don't like it, don't do it again! :)

I hope this helps

Heading for the great escape.
Space mountain is a great laugh. However it is an old ride and some of those tight turns are a little jerky. Personally I think Rock n Roller coaster may be a better deal. ok you may get inverted once or twice but it is a much smoother ride and is just a blast, literally.:D

It is only 25mph, but it feels faster. There are no BIG BIG drops, its mostly turns. Its very dark, you basicily see stars and pass through about 2 scenes. its very fun not scary , nothing major like the monster coasters at 6 flags, islands of adventure, etc. Alien Encounter is more scary than this.

Back in October 2001, our 2nd trip to WDW, my little sister (then 8 years old) decided that she too was going to try the bigger roller coasters. We took her to Space Mountain, but when she saw that the seats were one in front of the other she quickly changed her mind, so we took her to Rock n Roller Coaster instead.
Now, everytime we go to WDW, we have to literally drag her OFF Rock n Roller Coaster (she loves it THAT much!), but she still won't go on Space Mountain!

So if you don't mind the odd inversion every now and again, and loud music playing during the ride then I agree with Pumbas Nakasak - Rock n Roller Coaster could be a better roller coaster.

Thanks loads! It is truly sad ( and all my own fault!) that I am in the same category as an 8 year old! ( My kids are WAY more adventurous than me!).
I think I might try Space Mountain as we are going to MK on our 1st day. We don't go to MGM until our last day by which point it'll be too late to try anything else! If I like SM there will be no stopping me and I might try RnR too! ( I can't believe I've written that!)

Remember this: Space Mountain is only 25 mph, but being in the dark gives you the sensation of going faster. Also, like Puumba said, it is a little on the jerky side. If you memorize the track and no which way to lean into the turns, you can take a lot of the jerkiness out of the ride.

RnRC is a very smooth ride and tons of fun, provided you can get past the takeoff. You REALLY accelerate at the beginning for about 3 seconds and then the ride levels off and it is a blast. It too is in the dark, but gives a much better ride than Space Mountain. Plus, the music is great!

For me Space Mountain literally hurts my stomach, cause I don't like rides that 'drop' regardless of how slow or fast they go.. Drops= Jamie doesn't ride :)
I think i have two stomachs or something:lol:
