I'm not a skinny person by any means, and I know if you're a certain size they'll make you purchase 2 tickets...anyone know exactly HOW large someone has to be before they make that call? I know you have to fit into the seat with the armrests down, but that gives me nothing to go off of since I haven't flown for 5 years (and i've put on weight since then)

The seat width on Southwest is 17''.

I wish you luck in not having to purchase two seats.

I think that whole deal is kind of unfair. People shouldn't be punished because they're a little larger, for whatever reason it may be. Would it kill them to just leave a seat empty? And hey, I fill up like 1/2 a seat - can I get a discount, then, if we're making larger people pay extra?

SW does not assign seats, so there is no way to just leave a seat empty next to someone. Airlines almost always overbook these days, but many of them are still failing, so I guess it WOULD kill them to leave a seat empty.

And with the decrease in seat size, almost everyone would like an extra seat to "spread' into as long as he didn't have to pay for it.

I don't take up "quite" all of my seat, but I really would prefer that someone else not take any remaining room away from me, either.

Perhaps when you book your next flight you could volunteer to sit next next to someone who needs the extra room so he doesn't have to pay for it.

I think this policy is fair. I have been crammed in a middle seat with 2 POS (Persons Of Size) in the aisle and window next to me on a MCO-PHX flight, it was not a fun 4 hour flight for me. If someone is going to spill over into my seating area that I paid for, then they should pay for the extra seat. Also, if a flight is not full on Southwest, they rebate the person for the extra seat. This policy is only for completely full flights.

I don't know if anybody remembers the two large ladies that were actually measured at the airport 5-6 years ago by southwest, and forced to buy extra tix. But I worked in a television newsroom, and for some reason, the video ended up on 2 of our stock footage reels. One of them for Southwest file video (anytime a SW airlines story came on the air) and the other for stories on obecity. Not that it is a funny story, by any stretch of the imagination, but it became an ongoing joke on if we would see them anytime a SW story or healty weight/fitness story was put on the air. Again, I know, "wrong" but it was still very funny. Those poor ladies. Hopefully they never saw our news.
