Southern California Eats

The only thing I know about food in SoCal is to never eat at the Denny's near the park. Your stomach will not be happy the next day when you are trying to enjoy your first time ever in Disneyland. Running to a trashcan to have a protein spill after riding Indian Jones is not the best start to a vacation 😂. The day got better so all was fine.

Don’t eat at any Denny’s. Lol Gross.

I finally moved into SoCal proper from the outside, so I've been accumulating food recommendations from friends.

I can speak and back up Dal Rae's. My grandfather lives in that area and used to take us all the time.

My current favorite place is this small little spot called Pasty Kitchen in Los Alamitos. They do, essentially, pasties, so handheld pot pies, but damn are they full of flavor (and don't skimp out on getting the gravy. I could literally drink the stuff). The place is old-school, and cash only, but the prices are incredibly good for what you get. Can't recommend it enough.

Big fan of KBBQ. I know it's not everyone's thing (and it definitely requires a group) but honestly my favorite food experience. If you're doing KBBQ, you really should head to Koreatown, and my personal recommendation would be Hae Jang Chon. It is definitely the more well-known and busier spots, but it's earned that reputation for being damn good. KTown also has Beer Belly, which is closing down soon but will still have a location open in Long Beach. Great beer selection, and the Death by Duck is, literally, to die for.

Finally, I'm a big fan of pho, and if you have the time, you might as well go to one of the best ones. Pho 79 in Garden Grove was given a James Beard Award, and it was well-deserved, as this place really did seem to pioneer pho in SoCal. (Though I will give a shout out to Pho Tasty in Artesia, which I've been going to for years and has always been quality).

The Original Pantry in Downtown Los Angeles is my favorite diner. They’ve never closed and they’ve been open for nearly a century. The only downside is it’s cash only, but the ye olden cashier corner is really cool to see.

Their portions are huge, so it’s always good to share. The pancakes are delicious and the sausage...yummy. Be prepared for possible long lines.

I think it would be good to list Anaheim restaraunts for people staying there:

Slaters 50/50 (Gourmet Burgers with any kind of topping you might want)
Wings Empire (Buffalo Chicken fries are amazing)
Fa Sa Thai (great Thai Food)
The Scratch Room (best breakfast I’ve ever had)

The Scratch Room has been very good the few times I've been there.

I was very impressed with Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. I went in skeptical (I was meeting my former choir teacher for lunch on my way to Scary Farm, he chose the restaurant,, and I wasn't feeling breakfast at all after a long morning and dealing with LAX), but I was blown away by how good both the chicken and waffles were! There appear to be 10 or so around the LA area, including one on S. Harbor Blvd. If you're near one, and you're feeling breakfast-y, I'd definitely recommend it!
