Ummm... nah.
Actually, I've been waiting for this upcoming hockey season for the last 5 years. Not being able to keep up with the high spending teams, the Penguins were forced to basically dismantle their team and sell off every player they had. The last Penguins team was nothing more than a minor league team. And finishing in last place kinda proved it. But not now! This is the season the Penguins will rise again! With the new salary cap of 36 million (what's been reported so far), the high spenders (Rangers, Flyers, Red Wings) are going to struggle to get under the cap. Meanwhile, the Penguins only have $6.5 million in commitments for next season. That means they have nearly 30 million to spend! Even if they don't go to the maximum, they have to spend at least another $18 or so million to get to the salary floor. With the huge list of free agents available and the amount that they have to spend, the Penguins could basically become an mini-All Star team.
So far, only Mark Recchi has officially joined the Penguins. But they are targeting a lot of big names. I don't know who else they'll get but I'm drooling over these possible line combinations. Alexei Kovalev - Mario Lemieux - Mark Recchi, Teemu Selanne - Alexei Zhamnov - Paul Kariya. Is it just wishful thinking? Maybe, but the Penguins can make it happen!
