Facts about the Sorcerer Mickey Hat Icon at the Studios

CENTERPIECE OF THE CELEBRATION

Towering over Hollywood Boulevard at the Disney-MGM Studios is the unforgettable centerpiece of the celebration- a gigantic, shimmering 12-story Sorcerer Mickey hat, ever a symbol of Disney magic, created especially for this colossal occasion.

Hat Height - The hat itself is 100-feet tall. Since it is resting atop the ears and canted to the side, the summit of the Icon will settle at 122 feet.

Icon Weight - 156 tons

Hat Weight (the brim and hat only, excluding the ears and support structure) - 27 tons

Foundation Concrete - If poured on a 1' depth, the amount of concrete in the base would cover an entire football field.

Hat Size (as wardrobe) - The hat is a size 605 and 7/8

Mickey Size (if he were to wear it) - For a proportional perspective, Mickey, wearing this hat, would be 350 feet tall. (Based off of scaling the real-life Entertainment Characters in the park)

Hat Paint (Chameleon Paint) - The hat is painted with a custom paint technique called "chameleon paint" which will cause the hat to shift in color as Guests move closer and around it. We are using enough of this "automotive type paint" to cover 500 Cadillacs.

Mickey Ears (Light Ribbon) - The faces of the ears are a new special effect called "Light Ribbons" (by Walt Disney Imagineering). The ears will appear to change colors, surface shapes, and sparkle with internal pixie dust lighting.

  • 91 panels for the hat
  • 18 sections for the brim
  • 18 spirals
  • 6 stars
  • 2 moons
  • 13 total air vents
  • 13,493 bolts holding the hat together
  • 26,986 washers
  • 17,000 feet (or 57 football fields) of underground utility piping
  • HAT interior space = 59,458 cubic feet
  • HAT can hold 444,744 gallons of water
  • HAT can hold 3,704,720 pounds of water
  • Ring Beam = 56 1/2 feet in diameter
  • Mickey Hand height = 39' 6" high
  • Mickey Hand width= 32' 8 1/4"
  • Left Ear height - "to top of ear" = 61' 3"
  • Right Ear height - "to top of ear" = 39' 2 1/4

What's with the 7/8 - why not round it up to a full size - just wondering.
Thanks for the unusual facts - interesting reading.

First of all, thanks for sharing MKT, I thought it was interesting. Especially the part about how big a Mickey to wear that hat would have to be! I also always wondered what that special lighting pixie dust was called.

 Secondly, JackS, before you ask him "why did you post that?", why don't you ask yourself the same question before you post anything yourself on these boards? MKT shared useful information, not well known to the public, under the Secrets Forum, where it belonged! Nearly everything he and others on this forum post is very helpful.

I suggest you should follow the example. I am tired of seeing posts by you that only say "That's interesting" , "indeed" or "that's cool" or similar responses. Doing a search for your name shows how common this is. While this type of reply might be appropriate for the chit-chat forum, it does not contribute anything to the discussion on the other message boards. One liners like these on the internet are generally considered improper etiquette. I don't see a problem with them occasionally(and see no problem if a short message can actually convey useful information), but when 90% of your posts are this way, I do. It would be better to say "I think that's cool because..." and at least give some substance to your post.

Are you just trying to increase your post number? It sure seems like that, only being a member for a month, and having 650+ posts already?? If they all contained useful information, I would be very appreciative, but when all they do is clutter the board with short 2 word replies, I think it needs to stop.

I will give you the benefit of the doubt and hope that you did not know this. Please think before you post. :)

Somebody has been doing some research. Why I don't know, but apparently to plaster my face. And look at my posts 90% of them are not two words. Ok, there is no law with posting like that. Everyone on these boards does itevery now and then. Second of all why are you looking up my profile, I don't care if you do. But if you have a problem please PM me first. And the way I have many posts is that I am in almost every section with a thread, or a post. It doesn't matter how many posts you have on this board, its not like the end ofthe world. I just spend a lot of time here. If you did the same you could increase your post numbers also. You need to think before You post. :D
