Sony accuses Disney of inflating Pirates takings

Sony has complained of "irregularities" in Walt Disney's boast that its latest Pirates of the Caribbean movie has smashed box office records.
In a rare public spat between the two Hollywood studios, Sony has accused Disney of including a seventh day of takings in figures purporting to show unprecedented six-day takings of $401m (£202m) for the third part of the series, At World's End.

Previews in several countries were rolled in to the total, though Disney said this did not amount to many filmgoers. Sony said that including a seventh day, its recent hit Spiderman 3 grossed $418m.

I wouldn't call it jealousy....it would be if Pirates had bested Spider-Man, but it didn't. It is cheating in the movie industry if you add another day into the scheme and if you add that day then other studios should be allowed to add another day as well.

Disney is known for trickery in this business and I wouldn't be surprised if they did try something to make themselves look better than the competition.

I was disappointed with both movies to be honest (Spiderman 3 and Pirates 3). Neither deserved to better the totals of their respective Part 2's.

While watching Pirates 3, I longed for the Keira Knightley clevage shots from part 1.

While watching Spiderman 3, I couldn't take Peter Parker's constant wining and complaining. He is far too much of a wuss to be a super hero. Give your powers to someone who actually has an ounce of toughness. Peter Parker is a far cry from Bruce Wayne. Long live Batman!!!

And oh yeah, I almost forgot, Sony is definitely jealous. Long live Disney!

Ummm, of what, exactly???

Ummm, envious of what, exactly???

You answered the third question...how about the first two now.

According to the original post, it implies that Pirates 3 has made more money in it's 6 day total, than Spider-Man 3 did in it's 7 day total, which is why we think Sony Pictures is jealous.

I don't know, I haven't seen anything about it. But it could give reason that Sony is a little envious, claiming that Disney fudged their numbers trying to show how great their film is compared to Disney.

That answer would be Disney's box office awesomeness.

In other words...you don't have an answer...that's okay, just curious.

Now, Darthjohnny...

.

But that is not what Sony is saying at all, or implying. Read it again. They are saying the Pirates 6 day figures actually include a 7th day...so, Sony has stated what their numbers would have been if they add the 7th day, which is still more than Pirates.

Maybe it is Disney that is a little envious...or at least trying to save some face.

To be honest, both movies dissapointed at the box office...Spider-Man after it's giant opening weekend, and Pirates all together.

Its all good...
There is a movie coming out soon that will blow Pirates and Spiddy away
Harry Potter...With the new book being released shortly after the movie there will be a pretty big buzz the kiddies will be going in drones...

Pirates missed out this time in the younger generation because its darker
whereas when harry potter movies keep getting darker they still are tame for the teenies and kids...

It's true that At World's End has "underperformed." But, considering the ridiculous success of "Dead Man's Chest," it's not as if the franchise is in trouble or anything like that.

I think that in general, the lenghth, poor reviews, and decidely dark subject matter may have had a negative effect (hower miniscule).

But, in the end, The Pirates franchise is still giving Disney a heapload of cash.

Of course it's not in trouble. And yep, it is making a ton of cash...and I don't think anyone is saying otherwise.

The contention was that Sony was "envious" and "jealous" of Disney and Pirates...something that I fail to see, due to Spider-Man being every bit as popular and successful as Pirates.

I think Disney, after the numbers seen from Dead Man's Chest, expected AWE to just crush everything...it didn't even come close. So they plugged in a couple of numbers that they shouldn't have to help them save face. No big deal...I sure wouldn't condem them or lose any sleep over it...but when somebody calls them on it (Sony), all of a sudden Sony is envious of the numbers AWE had. How much sense does that make...since Sony had the same success, even more maybe. I can see Sony wishing Pirates had done poorly, but they can't be "envious" of something they have as well!! :brick:

Having seen the first two Spidy movies and the first two Pirates movies, Disney did a much better job with character developement and story line. Disney didnt just throw alot of special effects at the base story line like Sony did with Spidy. Nothing to be ashamed of, but in this industry, when you make accusations like Sony did, there is a driving reason. In my opinion, they were not confident in there product when compared to the Pirates franchise, so they had to start throwing stones....

Timmay, I think you should take a second look at it. From what I get, Sony is claiming that Disney included a 7th day in its six day total because they are claiming that something doesn't add up how Pirates 3 could make so much money in 6 days (it is "unprecedented" according to the original post), as their Spider-Man 3 movie could only achieve that amount of success in a full week.

That is why it looks like Sony might be "envious".

Nope...you are mistaken.

Disney reported Pirates made 401 million in six days...that much is clear.

Sony says that is not what Pirates made in six days because Disney added earnings from the seventh day to the six day total...so Disney is really reporting seven day totals, not six! Sony says if they were to add their seventh day as Disney did, the Spider-Man total would be 418 million...17 million more than Pirates.
