Song of the South

Hey everyone...I was wondering if anyone could help me out with something that I have always wondered about...

Why is it that Disney is so ashamed of the movie Song of the South? Most people who ride Splash Mountain have no clue that the characters in that attraction are from a WONDERFUL Disney movie. It's so sad. It is very difficult to find any information about it as well. I remember seeing it in the theaters sometime in the 80's but then I heard nothing more about it.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks!:)

Hey wasup?

Working at Splash Mountain, I would be asked all the time about Song of the South and where people could buy it because obviously we dont sell it.
Our managers told us that it is considered a very racial movie and that Disney did not want to sell it at the park....for what reason I will never know. Being 21, I barely remember the movie when I was little but if you think about it......tar babies etc........uhh yea lol.
If you are looking to buy the movie, we tell ppl that you can only find it online and it will come from europe or japan but make sure u get the english version......hope that helps!

Peace Out............

it's a fantastic film, but I can understand their reluctance to roll it out again, with all the PC groups and whatnot. I frankly wouldn't either.

HOWEVER....

I dunno if any of you follow the DVD scene, but 20th Century Fox rolled out a "Fox Studio Classics" line last year of restored films of the 40's and 50's.

number "0" in the collection is a silent film from 1927 of little interest to anyone besides uber collectors. said uber-collectors could purchase it if they bought three other Studio Classics DVDs and sent in a mail-in offer.

the DVD is aimed and marketed and in fact only AVAILABLE to people who would apprechiate it for what it is.

I doubt there would be a problem if Disney did a similar limited release of Song of the South. hell, you can buy pieces of it in the Treasures tins.

although I understand Disney's need to be friendly to everyone at all times, they also have a long and occasionally unsavory past that they need to adnowledge and move on. you can't write the black, japanese and jewish stereotypes you often see in older Warner and Disney cartoons out of the history books any better than you can (or should) forget the mislead, antiquiated notions that forged them.

hehe..

I bought a legitimate copy years ago in London, and now I'm glad I had bought it while there. I've since had an NTSC copy made for my enjoyment :D

but yeah... a few of the British goods stores in the Metro Orlando area will have little difficulty selling you a VHS copy on the spot.. it's not cheap though.. like $40-50

The uncle remus stories were originally by a guy named Joel Chandler Harris. Maybe the stories do have a bit of influence from the time period in which they were written, however I dont think that the Disney interpretation of the stories is offensive in any way. I think that Disney needs to grow some balls and tell off those people who have to whine about everything being racist.

You can see a ten minute segment of it in color on the new Alice in Wonderland Special Edition DVD. It's in the "One Hour in Wonderland" program located on Disc 2. They show it about 30 minutes into the program.

If you would really like to see Song of the South on DVD try calling them about the clip on the new Alice DVD. Tell them how much you enjoyed it and that you would like to see the whole film! They get negative calls about things, if they get enough POSITIVE ones for that film, it could help them consider releasing it.

Uncle Remus was the hero of Song of the South:D

The "crows" scene in Dumbo is more PC incorrect than anything in Song of the South.

Both were made in a different era and PC changes daily:rolleyes:

I have Song of the South and if you watch it with an open vs close mind it is not racist.:) But if you are looking for something that isn't and never was there (racism) you will find it. Much like many people decided Scar was Gay. And let's see what was the record people claimed if you played it backward it was Satin?

By the by what difference would it have made if Scar was Gay. He helped make the Lion King what it was.

I didn't know Scar was gay, but I know Pleakley from Lilo & Stitch is! (not that there's anything wrong w/that)

Anyways, I've always loved the characters from Song of the South and wish it was on DVD. I have the new Alice in Wonderland DVD and the clip is really neat.

I'd like to have a copy of Song of the South b/c I like Disney movies where they combine animation and real life. I always thought it was funny how people made a big deal when Roger Rabbit came out about the actors and animated characters interacting- when the same thing was done in South of the South like 50 years earlier! -Stephanie

Well, I don't think Scar was gay...he has a wife and kids in the sequel, doesn't he? Now Pleakley, yeah he is gay!

Anyway, yeah if you liked that clip from Song of the South you should really call the 800 number that's on the DVD case and let Disney know. Tell them you really enjoyed and it would really like to see the entire movie on DVD.

I ordered the DVD from Europe and watch it all the time. It is such a good film. I do see that there are some things that would be offensive. But it is a part of our history. Why turn your back on history????

Man, I want to see Song of the South so bad. My question is, why would they bring it out in Europe, and Tokyo, but not bring it out in the U.S. I guess i'll have to buy the 'Alice In Wonderland' DVD now. Thanks for the info.

BTW: Isn't Timon gay as well?

I never bought into that, personally. now Pleaky.... he's gay. he's ultra gay. ;)

also: in Hunchback II, Hugo and Djali are basically making out. yeah, it's true that Djali is kinda androginous, but I'm convinced he's a he. ;)

and... come on... it's a gargoyle and a GOAT. what was going on over at DFA?

Um, I didn't say Scar was gay.:) I said "many people decided Scar was gay".

Got to go watch my copy of Song of the South.:D

Why do any of these characters need to have a $exual identity at all? It is animated fair directed towards a family audience. I think the official stance is that they are abstinent…

In any event, if we are going to dissect the orientations of characters in Disney movies, lets discuss something a little more concrete… like the real cross dressers in Marry Poppins. :goodnevil

I don't understand, what were we talking about? Are we talking about the actual characters, or the people that play them. In that case the guy that plays Timon is gay. He said on the Rosie show, one time. Anyways how did we get from Song of the South, to that other subject?
