Song of the South?

I know this has been discussed before, and everything, but just wanted to bring the subject again. While in line for SM the other day, I just said to myself "Why did Disney make a ride, but not bring the movie out"? I've heard about ratial issues, and other things. But still why make a ride, which has to do the same thing with the movie, but not bring it out? And there also selling the movie in Europe, but why not here? Thanks! Post!

Someone else can probably answer it better than I can but:

They won't release SOTS in the U.S because people say it portrays slavery much different than it was. They say the movie makes it seem happy

The ride is just about Rabbit and the Briar patch, and doesn't have anything to do with slavery, I'm guessing that is why they made the ride.

Well, I got the PAL format of Song Of The South, and had it converted into English so it plays on a VCR. It was actually a good movie, but i can understand how it wouldnt be released in the US, cause there is a lot of racial stuff in the movie. It did explain the importance of Chick a pin hill and the Laughing place. It was really interesting

I think they still (legally) sell SotS in the UK. It is a PAL format but they "give" a converted VHS copy with the PAL. I got one from a friend as a gift about five years ago.

UK forum members- Can you still get SotS there?

I've never seen it anywhere for sale over here.

And I've been looking.

they haven't sold that here in years. It really is a cute movie, but we live in a different world now. You have to remember that movie was made a long time ago.

Me too! Only mine was recorded from TV and it's in Portuguese.

I really don't see what's all the fuss about it. If you portray slavery authentically people say you're a racist; if you try to be nice about it you're not taking it seriously. It did happen, people, and you can't shield the "poor little kids" from it. This PC stuff sickens me sometimes, just like the guns in Jungle Cruise and the pirates at PotC...

Does anyone know where one can get a copy of SotS? Are there any companies outside the US that would ship one? Web sites?

Also, I've been looking for the much touted Millenium Celebration CD and it seems to be sold out everywhere. Anyone know anyplace that still has it?

They show "Gone with the Wind" here all the time and no one bats a eye.

Check out the scene with the crows in Dumbo.

Both of those were made about the same time as SotS, yet only SotS is baned:confused:

How is SotS racist when the hero of the whole movie is Uncle Remus?:veryconfu

I, like most people, dont see why SOS is not released. I also own the movie and have watched it many times to try and find out why... but i was unsuccessful in finding a reason... My only guess is b/c it is targeted toward children while Gone With the Wind is not. The movie is actually more live action than animation. The least Disney should do is play the stories of the "Brers" They used to do that back in the 80's when I was younger.

Song of the South

It is no longer sold in Europe. It was taken stopped in 2001. Whatever is left on there shelves are it.

It is a wonderful movie and a classic but Disney has distanced themselves from it since after 1986, thats the last time it was shown in a theater.

I watch it all the time and can see where some things would cause some problems in today's world with everyone so politically correct. Also some things children would question why.

Disney may release this sometime since they did purchase UPC numbers for it but it will be edited very much and wont be the same movie. Maybe they plan on a entirely new movie featuring the Brear Rabbit and others instead of the live actor parts.

If you can get your hands on one of the pal tapes from europe you will be lucky to get it converted. Many wont do it any longer.

If you have any questions about the movie let me know.

I thought I saw it...

I rememebr when I was little (I'm 18 now), that they released Song of the South as one of those Limited Editon/Gold Collection things. My advice is to check Ebay or ask at the Disney Store- they will point you in the right direction.

Not to thread drift, but my mom is a German teacher, and she has been looking for a Disney movie called The Great Air Ballon (or something like that). it's about a family who uses a hot air ballon to go over the Berlin Wall during the cold war. Is anyone familar with it or have it??? Please let me know. Thanks!

I own the movie :D and have watched it many times:) .

I doubt if you have ever seen it once:eek:

One can read into something anything they want. Some said Scar was an attack on Gays. I know of no main stream G or L organization that agreed. I also know of no main stream civil rights group that has come out against SotS.

I will say it one last time Uncle Remus was the HERO of SotS
:D  :sohappy: If being a HERO is rascist in your mind than so be it.
