Song of the South may be out on DVD

Well said WDWCP.

I wonder though if the Disney conservatism on this issue is even justified by people who found the film offensive in the respects we brought up here.

I am not an African American, nor were my family -- at least on my father's side -- slave owners. I would love to hear the opinion of someone who the film could actually affect emotionally in ways other than its intent.

Are there any African American readers of this site who have seen Song of the South and found it demeaning or otherwise distasteful?

Were there a great many who complained about the film back in the 70's to prompt Disney to "ban" it in the US or was it considered a pre-emptive move?

I thought Song of the South was supposed to be portrayed (sp) after the Civil War. The slaves were actually free. The mom and son went to the plantation to live because the dad was getting grief for wanting the slaves to be free.

I am remembering this from childhood and my memory is a bit rusty.

Excellent point! I'm not sure if you are correct or not though. Although I enjoyed the movie tremendously, it was still a bit before my time...
