For our upcoming trip we watched the 2004-2005 promotional dvd that disney sent out for free. (We watched it since my friend is coming with and she hasn't been since she was nine and doesn't remember a lot)

While we were watching it we noticed two things. . .

1) A lot of the shots of Epcot did not show the wand on spaceship earth.

2) They called formerly known as MGM just Disney Studios

So my hubby came to the conclusion that these projects have been in the works for a while. . . anyone else notice something like that?

Just something to ponder, I know that y'all would like that little tidbit of information. . . . :drevil:

I think they just called it the Disney Studios because they only had the licensing for the MGM name in the US, and they send those DVDs all over.
Not sure about the non-wand shots.

The wand shots are because most of the shots were old stock footage. It is really funny actaully they didn't have much with the Wand in it until just before they decided to get rid of it.

The "Studios" was due to the contract with MGM where they could not use the name Disney-MGM Studios for some things but they could for others.

The studios name change has always been something they were going to have to deal with at some point. The wand coming down was really a overnight thing, at least that is the way it seems to most of us.

I've noticed that in a lot of things they just called it the Disney Studios. I don't think I've seen a TV show where it was referred to as MGM and there are other places that I just don't remember. Truthfully, with all the legal trouble for the licensing deal (not being able to use it in certain contexts, having to change the name, etc), it probably would have been better for Disney if the park was originally called "Disney's Hollywood Studios presented by MGM" from the beginning.

PS: I'm sure there already was a whole discussion about the name change already, but I missed it, as I only discovered this forum after the name change was announced.

1. The SSE shots without the wand are, as others have pointed out, just because they used old stock footage. You'd be amazed at how old some stock footage is that companies use sometimes (Case in point, the "3am phone call" commercials from Hillary Clinton's campaign feature purchased stock footage that is about 8 years old. The little sleeping girl shown in the footage is now an adult of voting age.).

2. The deal with MGM (and the name of the park) was always the source of a lot of misunderstandings. Most people (MUCH to Disney's chagrin) just referred to the park as "MGM" or "MGM Studios" and a lot of people assumed that MGM somehow shared ownership in the park with Disney. At the time that Disney went to build the park, they knew that Universal Studios already had plans to build a park nearby. And although some might debate this, at that time it was felt that Universal had a much stronger library of films from which to build some exciting theme park attractions. So Disney's plan was to get the rights from different studios (such as 20th Century Fox and others) to use some of their specific films. When they approached MGM, MGM gave them a counter-offer... "Let us put our name next to your's on the park, and we'll give you exclusive use of our entire film library (with special conditions for Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind)." That was an irresistible offer for Disney, and it's ironic that they never fully took advantage of it over the years. The Great Movie Ride is pretty much where the MGM films are seen, and that attraction is now sorely in need of updating. Anyway, the other part of the deal was that Disney did not have to use the MGM name in any video media. So contrary to what others have stated here (that Disney was "not allowed" to use the name), it was actually that they were under no legal obligation to use the name. And since Disney didn't really want people referring to it as "MGM" all the time, it made good sense to leave the name off and not make reference to MGM any time they didn't have to.
