Something Happened To My Digital Pictures

just finished downloading a LOT of digital pictures to my computer and have noticed something weird. The left side of a bunch of my pictures has color and the other part does not. The color part is just a slice. maybe 1/4 of the entire picture. The other part is not black and white, it is just missing the strong colors like it is suppose to have.

Any idea why this happened? Maybe my media stick was damaged some how? and way to fix this?

Here is a sample.

You could try Photoshop

Try adjust>Auto levels

Don't know if it will completely restore your color levels, but it's worth a try !

a memory stick error is unlikely ... it's digital storage .. if this get corrupted the whole image is lost or damaged .. not only some odd color flaw

I guess you had some filter activated in your camera like partly black and whit or shallow colors .. :veryconfu

Never seen that.

Did you download from the camera rather than a card reader?

downloaded it straight from the camera. would heat have anything to do with it? I think my camera was in my car down here in the deep south and got a little bit too hot.

thanks for everyones response.

Hmmm. My first thought was it looks like it was desaturated from L to R with a Gradient Mask. Since it came out of the camera this way, with a magenta cast on the right, I'd guess a sensor issue. Now, whether it's heat induced or not and permanent or transient, good guess. Have you tried to repro it around the house? Like against a plain, well-lit, white wall?

I think you need to do some experimenting to see if you can duplicate the problem. Try taking new pictures with all your memory cards to see if you can narrow it down to a specific card or a bad camera.

I heard the storage cards can take a lot of abuse. I know of a guy who washed his CF card and didn't lose an image.

my dad suggested the exact same to things. try every chip and take a picture of a white wall. will give those a try this weekend. my dad said it is probally a senor issue. will call sony too.

That's most definitely not a memory card error. It's either a problem with the software or sensor. Given how uniformly the coloring changes I'd be most suspect of a software problem.

Just in case there is a problem getting the signal from the camera to the PC, try downloading the images using a card reader.

Also, it's possible that heat could have corrupted the images. Experiment taking some fresh pictures and also see what happens if you take photos using a different memory card. If the pics on the new one are OK, but the old ones are still bad then try reformatting the card and test again. If they still come out bad then the card may be junk.

well I am pretty darn sure its the camera. The pictures I took before were still on my chip and they were the same. we took some pictures on labor day and the first 10 or so had the color stripe. also the camera was acting funny too. asking my to power off than back on and doing some flickering when I powered it on. Have taken alsom 9500 pictures with it. going to send Sony an email and see what they have to say.

the camera is a sony cyber shot DSC-P10

Are these pictures that you have already transferred to you computer and they appeared there without the problem, but if you transfer now they appear with the problem?

That could indicate a problem transferring from the camera. Try putting the memory card into a separate card reader to transfer the data to see if it still happens then.
