Software to convert quicktime movies?

My digital camera takes movies. Problem is that they are quicktime and the camera didn'tcome with quicktime pro or anything else to convert or edit it in any way. In fact, if I take the movie on the side, I don't even have a way to rotate the film.

All I'm looking for is some shareware/freeware to convert the .mov file into something else like a .wma file. Because once I convert it, I have options for ways of editing it then.

I have a bunch of videos that I can't even share at the moment. (Part of the problem is the file format is so large that I have 30, 50, even 100 meg movies that need to be compressed to share.) I've looked online for info, but haven't found any help. Thought someone here might have an idea what to do.

Thanks,

Buying some software would be quicker and far easier (as I found out eventually)

In the meantime, I used mp4cam2avi from http://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/

It`s primarily designed for converting MP4 files to AVI, but works fine with .mov as well (the MP4 is based on the Quicktime .mov format) and seems more stable than other free software I`ve tried.

Now, an AVI file could be quite big. Also, if you want to edit it in lower end software (eg WIndows Movie Maker) you`ll need to then convert the AVI into a WMV. Though it`s not meant to, Movie maker will (slowly) do this - drop the AVI onto the timeline and don`t do anything with it. Just immiediately save the video - it`ll save as a WMV. Save it at `best quality for playback on my computer`. This will let you load the new WMV back into Movie Maker (or similar) without a noticable loss of quality and edit it as normal.

Oh my goodness, I forgot entirely about this post! I'm so sorry!

After some head-scratching, your help totally worked out. I was able to convert a 109 meg .mov file into a 10.6 meg .wmv file - MUCH easier for web sharing. I even took a stab at adding a title and credits. My first time ever. I'm quite thrilled with how it worked out though. My needs are very simple in the video editing catagory - I just really want to be able to share them in a reasonable file size.

In case you're curious, the first video I managed to make using your advice is of the Back to the Future: The Ride and you're welcome to view it here.

Out of curiosity, what paid programs do you find are worth the cash? In the event I decide I want to get even more creative with movies. :animwink:

Thanks for your help. It was GREATLY appreciated. In the over two years I've had my camera, I've never figured out what to do with the files until now. Your how-to was perfect.

Yup, he kept saying it. OVER and OVER. It's a tiny, pocket-sized digital camrea. It was right in front of me. It's not like a full-blown camcorder or anything. I was in the front of the car, with the camera held in front of my body. Not above my head or anything even. I put my hand over the lcd and still, he kept saying it.

Rude!! The ride is closing. You know, forever. So chill dude, seriously.

For quick and dirty converts that usually work fairly well, you can always use the s/w included with Windows. It's called Windows Movie Maker. You can drag a file into the work area and then convert it to various sizes of your choice into WMV format, including small enough sizes to mail several minutes of video to someone else w/o blowing up their Inbox.

I couldn't bring it in as a .mov file. (It didn't recognize that as a valid file format.) I had to convert it to an .avi first then was able to save it as a .wmv But the extra step of making it an .avi first isn't hard and it gives me the end product that I want. I'm not looking to really edit, just make it a web-friendly file size. The process marni1971 explained worked perfect for all I needed to do.
