Soccer On The Rise In America...Baseball On The Way Out.

Both my girlfriend and best friend are huge soccer fans, and when I'm watching with either of them I can get into the sport. On my own though I just have no horse in the race. I was raised on the Yankees and Giants, but I wasn't raised with any soccer team.

Nobody's watching the Subway Series here because the Mets are sweeping the Yankees...

(and nobody watches the Mets)

;)

I've been watching some of it. Its like the TV is picking up a feed from an alternate universe.

I've also been watching some of it. But that's because anytime the Yankees are losing I want to watch.

On another note: Soccer is certainly a difficult sport. It requires a lot of skill, strength, and stamina. There are several MLB players who would die of heart attacks if they tried to play 15 minutes. But a soccer match can end in a TIE!!! What is that?! Someone has to win!

I was a FIFA ref for around 13 years before I let my certification expire (still thinking about getting back into it, it is good exercise AND I get paid to do it!)...

I can't wait for World Cup season, but otherwise I really don't follow it much. It's surprising that MLS never took off, considering how many people play it in their youth (boys and girls).

But, since this topic is about soccer...here ya go!

That really depends on what the league competition rules are. Many leagues either do extended play or shootouts (more common to see shootouts).

I think soccer is more of a players' sport than a spectators' sport, which is why it's not necessarily as popular or televised. At least that's what I've gathered from observations.

I've always sortof thought of it as hockey on grass. <grin>

Oh really?! I admit that I am ignorant when it comes to the sport. I tried watching some of the last World Cup, but that's about it.

Hah! Very true. Though, sometimes it gets a bit tough if the camera can't keep up. Pro players can kick almost the length of the field.

That's in every sport. Even in football, the cameraman can't keep up because of the numerous cuts a runner makes.

I wonder what football would be like if soccer players never become football kickers... Those toe kicks are just painful to watch.

You'll see it in the World Cup due to the bracket / scoring system they use. So, while a tie may make for a poor finish to the game, in the brackets it can have dramatic effects. So can blow outs. When it comes around next year look at how they set up the competition groups. It's interesting to see how they pair teams together.

I don't really follow it that closely, I just watch the games. I root for Germany most of the time.

Baseball is the only sport worth watching, IMO...though it is better viewed in the park (not on TV.)

I've been hearing since like 1980 that soccer is really catching on with America's youth. Never seen any evidence of that, though. Soccer is for Europeans and South Americans. ;) :D

Agree, baseball at the park is much better than on TV. I can't watch it on TV...just not the same. But, I love going to a good live game.

The highlight shows on MLB TV are fun to watch. The best one is "MLB Tonight," which shows highlights right after they happen and cuts in on games live in crucial situations.

It's getting popular among students. I think once they leave school or stop playing, they don't care too much after that.

Soccer is viewed as a safer alternative to football, which is becoming softer and more gentle everyday it seems. Not all parents like their kids going into football where they make contact with others on every play.

Comparing attendance at a special, out of the ordinary event of world class competitors, to the daily game (of which there are over 80 of) across town? Fail from the first paragraph...
I thought the same exact thing. Two world class soccer teams in a U.S. exhibition is a special thing for fans to see. The Yankees vs. Mets is something that will happen countless more times. As you said, not a valid comparison. Sort of gives away the bias of the article's writer.
