So why weren't there many strollers back in the day?

Math is hard. 1972 was my first visit.
Okay then we're talking about two different things.

My position is that strollers are appropriate at WDW for stroller-aged children. Others are saying strollers are never appropriate regardless of age. I don't think anyone is arguing that it's okay for 7 or 8 year olds to be in a stroller.*

A wagon is not a stroller. Leave the wagon at home with the iPad. And any kid of any age with earbuds on in WDW or outside of WDW at a family meal deserves a swift kick in the rear.

I have taken my oldest son 3x, 7 months/3y/4y. I have taken my youngest once 9m. Every trip was fantastic. It's almost like people are different, and different things work for different people.
Nah...it’s much easier to just judge others and criticize anyone who thinks differently :)

My only advice I would give to anyone deciding on whether to take kids to WDW is do what makes you happy and don’t listen to anything you read on the internet (except of course for my advice to not listen to anything on the internet).

Who puts an 8 or 9 year old in a stroller? They don't even come that large unless they're specially designed for special needs children.
My 9 year old is about the same size as my wife...if we brought a stroller she would have just as much a right to it as him.

Whenever one of these threads crop up or in this case is revived from the dead after 9 months the same thing happens. People go to extremes with examples. The vast majority of strollers at WDW are filled with age appropriate kids. People like to talk about the exceptions as if they are the norm and the cause of the problem. 8 and 9 year olds aren’t driving the demand for strollers. If Disney really wanted to address the issue they would limit the size of strollers allowed. I’m surprised they don’t considering they could make more money renting appropriate sized strollers. IMHO its not the volume of strollers or the age of the riders that cause a problem, it’s the size of some of the strollers.

There are 4 parks. Not the 1 or 2 we had through the late 80s at the vacation kingdom of the world, when it was a slower, full resort experience.

4 parks, 2 water parks, 2 mini golf courses, and Disney Springs. All at record-high rates with heavily scheduled dining and fastpasses, and most Americans, at least, with our relatively limited time off trying to cram as much as possible into as little time as possible.

That's a lot for any child.

It's a combination of things I think. More people now days. But also think it is because strollers are used as a storage space/moving locker now. Where as before they were pretty much just a way to secure a little kid. Strollers now days are like mini SUVs. lol

Also, I think a lot of parents now days are guilty of just putting there kids in strollers since it is easier for them. Don't have to keep an eye on them as much and don't have to make sure they are constantly holding your hand.

I also notice parents now days let kods use strollers til they are 5 or 6, even 7. When I was a kid, my mom & dad stopped bringing the stroller once we were about 3, maybe 4.

It's a sign of the times unfortunately. As a whole, society has become more lazy and self-centered since those pics were taken in 1991. Sad but true.
You hit it right on the head. It's a moving mini-SUV for families with everything they think they might want to have for their child. I've seen

Prepers carry less stuff around that some of these parents. You need diapers for a day, not a week. You really don't need to base camp for the whole family with your stroller.

I or the most part can deal with the strollers, except for the double wide ones. Those should be outlawed! Double front to back is just fine. double wide, it doesn't fit in the same space as a normal human being. It's too easy to run into other people just walking down Main Street. And they don't tuck out of the way easy being so wide. The lines and stores are generally designed around the width of a human being not two humans joined side by side. They block everything they are near.
They are a general nuisance and should be replaced with the in line doubles!

This is especially true of the rentals. The only thing worse than a side by side double is a side by side double that dad doesn't know how to fold up because he's only renting it for six days.

I kind of agree that older kids in a stroller is not the norm. Only because if it were more common, they would not stick out like a sore thumb so much. People's minds are used to seeing small kids in stroller so it does not even register as you pass them. But an older child crammed into one tells your brain that something is "off" and so you notice it. That is just human nature. So I would say to anyone wanting to put their older kids in a stroller, be aware that people will notice, some will comment and some of those will even be within earshot of your kid. It is easy for us as adults to write that kind of stuff off. But and 8yo will notice that people keep looking at them and they may hear comments. I am not saying this as any kind of judgement, just be aware that kids can be negatively affected by this, so weigh the pros and cons of that also when deciding on what is best for your family.

I have another theory regarding the stroller situation. "Back in the day" there weren't as many parks and the cost to go to one of the parks has increased exponentially over the years. I think most people used to be able to take their time navigating the 2 parks (with no FPs to run to) and maybe even visit them multiple times on the same trip. Now, with 4 parks, FPs, ADRs, park hoppers etc..., people try to cram so much into a trip that it's impossible for the kids to keep up. Plus, the parks are now well over $100 per day to visit so people feel they need to get their money's worth by spending as much time as they can at the parks. I don't remember Disney planning being as stressful when I was a younger; or being as rushed. You just bought a ticket and went to the park. When you got tired, you went back to the hotel and would maybe return to the park another day.

My "back in the day" with my kids was about 13 years ago. They had all 4 parks, 2 water parks, DTD, and fast passes back then. It was still a lot of money for us then too. We did not just wander around in an empty park. But, we did then what we do now, go at the pace of the slowest person. Back when the kids were smaller, they needed the more frequent breaks and down time. And now, I am sad to say, that it is me that is the slower one. I can't see squishing my 8 yo in a stroller just because I was in too much of a rush to get to the next ride, anymore then I would want them to force me into a wheelchair because I walk slower now. None of us is handicapped or incapable of walking during our vacations, but just not at the fastest rate possible, very few can keep up that kind of pace. But normal walking with reasonable breaks and meals, is something that most non- handicapped people 5 and up are able to do. When my kids were that age 6,7,8, you very rarely saw a child that age in a stroller. The amount of walking has not changed in these last few years, only the mentality of some people.

Think for yourselfer
I have been teaching kids and teens for almost 9 years - - -this is quite true.

The internet has become a black hole sucking all ages into its useless void of junk!
That last bit is true. Turning it off would not have the desired effect though. Kid's don't roam free anymore because parents don't let them. Turning the internet off isn't likely to change that. 🤷‍♂️

90% of the parents I speak to - - - How can I get my kids to play outside?
The solution, to me is obvious.

The only obstacle to this is that if one takes their kids outside - there is no one out there for them to play with.
When my son's were little, I took them to parks, playgrounds, zoo's, nature centers, beaches every chance I could get.

Hmm. I seem to be in the minority here. I think strollers are great. They make touring more pleasant for the owner / renter. And when I was in the park a few months back and rented a stroller for my 3 and 5 year olds - I was happy enough to let my 8 year old have a turn from time to time. Helps to keep them fresh, lets me walk faster to the next attraction.

Strollers may contribute to Magic Kingdom crowding since the 1970's, but its probably due to the attendance doubling more than strollers.
