So Who Has a Handle on the Dining Plan Changes?

As my trip gets closer, I'm starting to look at menus and think more and more about where we're actually going to eat. The tantalizing thing is being able to swap out the dessert or drink for a DDP snack. I remember from the last time we did free dining that I'll be happy if I never again see one of those little chocolate cakes in a plastic cup! So now that the changes have been out for a while... where are the best places to take advantage of the changes?

The thing that really jumped out at me is there's a big advantage now to eating counter service at a resort... you can use your refillable mug for your drink, and substitute an extra snack for your "drink" on the dining plan. We'll have to do that once or twice!

When you do a substitution do you have to do it at the time of transaction or does it go back into the snack credit pool. For instance if I decide not to get a drink with my counter service meal do I have to get the substituted snack right then or does it add a snack credit to my account? I own DVC and never use the DDP but I rent points from 3 contracts and my renters always have DDP questions.

You have to use your substitution when you get your meal.

Kind of excited to get an iced vanilla latte drink that they have at some of the counter service restaurants(the ones that come out of the machine) as my drink. Since it is a snack credit item, I should be able to switch it out for my dessert or drink if I got this right.

Here's a few that I've found from scanning the menus:

- Pinnochio Village Haus has some good sides that are snack credits: Breadsticks, soup, and a side salad.
- Pecos Bill's doesn't seem to have great desserts, but they have chili cheese fries that are a snack credit. You could get corn on the cob or apple slices as a side with your entree, and then the chili cheese fries could be your "dessert". Or extra fries... no judgment!
- A place like Boulangerie Patisserie or Sunshine Seasons would be a good place to skip the drink and double up on dessert (they both have a good selection of desserts).
- Pizzafari has breadsticks as a snack.
- Flame Tree has onion rings and french fries as snacks; none of the entrees seem to come with them.
- Yak & Yeti counter service has fried rice and an egg roll that you could sub out for dessert or drink.
- Using your mug at the resort instead of getting a drink

So I can walk in to a CS restaurant and order and entrée along with 2 sides and/or desserts that are considered snacks. Then ask for a free cup of water instead of having a beverage that is normally charged for? If this is true then I cannot see this lasting long. I do like the idea since I typically do not like soda or dessert.

Hmmmm.... I've used my snack for a nice breakfast of fried rice before. I'd like to know which places offer more breakfast-type foods (that count as snacks) that are actually open in the mornings. I didn't mind the fried rice, but it was the only place we could see that was open.

That's my plan, anyway!

Thanks for posting this. I had no idea of this change. We will make good use of getting another side instead of desert at counter service restaurants.

This is a great thread. I read that at table service you can substitute your dessert for a side salad, cup of soup, or fruit plate. But I don't think you can do that with a drink for table service. Does anyone have experience with this?

If you follow the link to the answer referenced in this answer, that author recommended a couple of non-Disney sites for dining news. Even the Moms Panel knows Disney's website is not up to snuff! :D

There is nothing in the brochure about substituting in table service meals, so assume you can't. https://disneyworld.disney.go.com/m...alog/WaltDisneyWorld/en_us/PDF/2015Dining.pdf
