So they have out so many fast passes...

It's going to happen sometimes. If they give out fast passes for 1:00 - 2:00, 1:05 - 2:05, 1:10 - 2:10, 1:15 - 2:15, 1:20 - 2:20, 1:25 - 2:25, 1:30 - 2:30, 1:35 - 2:35, 1:40 - 2:40, 1:45 - 2:45, 1:50 - 2:50, and 1:55 - 2:55, and all those people decide to show up at 1:55, then there will be a wait.

It would be nice if they would give a paper fastpass for 1 - 2 hours later to anyone who had a fastpass but didn't want to wait, or who came to line up for standby.

I have been to WDW three times since the FP+ has been issued (Oct, NOV, and Dec), and each time we were able to use the new system with the old paper passes. Even then when there were still options to get additional FPs, the FP lines were longer than usual! We had never waited as long as we did for such rides as Peter Pan or the Safari with a FP as we did those trips! It will be interesting this summer to see how it all goes down.

.....could spark WDW's new mid-year promotion: "2014 ...The Summer of Your Discontent"

Was the ride coming back up from a downtime? When I worked there, we would sometimes keep the Standby line closed for a bit until the Fastpass line could have a chance to clear up.

^This. With the old paper Fastpass system, when a downtime occurred, they would also put in a downtime in Fastpass which would usually cause the return times to jump up a bit. This lost period of time in return times allowed for the Fastpass line to catch up from so many Fastpasses that are now all returning at once. With Fastpass+, people book throughout the day so they can't do that. It can be harder for them to catch up to keep that Fastpass line down resulting in longer than anticipated wait times.

I have heard (even with legacy Fastpass) of Space Mountain letting in the Fastpass line first before standby just to get some of the Fastpass line down. They would not shut off standby regularly though. It's only when opening up after a downtime.

Nope, and I never insinuated that I wanted that. I'm taking my first trip to WDW next year and I'm not looking forward to this FP+ crap. It doesn't make me happy. That's all.

So you wouldn't have been happy with attractions getting a flood of returns under the legacy paper FP either, right? Just making sure...

Space was our first ride that afternoon after the morning at AK. I can't be 100% that it wasnt down, but I was checking the app frequently and it was never down. I know when I got in the fp+line, stand by was still open...AND the fp+ line was backed up to the entrance, but we were feeding in to the right side only.

no bueno ..... think they'll learn from this?

In my opinion, NO!! They will not learn from this. This management team, to me, doesn't appear to learn from anything. They'll just leave it as is until we all just accept it as normal and move on. I have absolutely no faith in this management team reacting to anything that has a negative effect on the consumer as long as it does not have a negative effect on their bottom line.
