So... how carried away do you get with your WDW trip planning?

Just how obsessive and disruptive to normal daily life is your pre-trip planning regiment? Being an analytical and compulsive planner, it was only natural that I would start to get a little carried away with the planning stages of our trips. Each trip my planning gets a little more involved. I'm sure I am an entry-level Disney pre-planner so I'm looking forward to what other folks do to organize and plan their trips! As we only can afford to come, at most, once a year, I try to make sure we maximize our experience!

Disney vacations are a family tradition for us. We first visited WDW in 1972 - I was 6 and my sister was 2. We lost count of the early visits, but we figure we are at around 14 visits - including 3 visits since 2011 (this year will make 4). Our recent return to Disney vacations was my mother's idea. She enjoys vacationing with my sister and I. And since we love to plan the vacation, she just sits back and let's us handle the planning. All the recent trips have been between Thanksgiving and Christmas - with the last 2 being the week after Thanksgiving. This year's trip will be the same time. We have learned a lot from those recent trips!

Mom always wanted to see the parks decorated for the Holidays, so in 2011 she planted the idea of going in December. Turns out we loved that trip sooo much, we have returned during that time period every trip since!

STEP ONE - Resort selection. In 2011 we stayed at the Port Orleans - French Quarter and LOVED it! We returned in 2012 and stayed there again. In 2014 we wanted to try something new and selected Coronado Springs. We didn't care for that location only because of the distance we were from the food court, front desk, store etc. For this year's stay we started our trip planning by making a 'short list' of new resorts we wanted to try. I, of course, made a spreadsheet. Complete with links to the various resorts:

After a long and somewhat exhaustive 'family meeting', we selected our resort for this year: Caribbean Beach Resort! Our first choice was going to be our first time at a Deluxe Resort - the Wilderness Lodge. But, after finding out the pool area would be closed during our trip, we decided to go with option 2 - CBR. We are rarely at the hotel, so it was hard to justify the cost of the Deluxe Resorts... but with a full 'rest day' scheduled in the middle of our stay, we thought we would try one. A day to rest around the pool is just what the doctor ordered on an 8 day trip! Since the pool at WL was going to be OOS, we opted to go back to a moderate resort. We went with a 'Preferred' room so we could be close to the main buildings (pool, food court, store, etc).

So... how nutso am I? My next post (if there is interest) will cover the current 12 tab spreadsheet and the lengths we went to selecting TS meals and making reservations for the trip!

Please! Share your pre-planning process! Please let me know I'm not alone... lol

Gotta say that I am pretty obsessed with planning and in the past I haven't wanted to deviate from the plan too much. However, this past trip, I added two days more worth of tickets once we arrived at our resort and randomly made fastpasses on the fly once we got to the park we were visiting. We had planned to hit parks at rope drop (fastpasses were made at the 60 day mark) for the morning, but we changed and went to water parks instead most mornings. We would head out to the park and just stop by and play mini-golf, as we were driving by before going to the park. We decided to head to the beach one day after leaving Epcot for a break. This was pretty crazy for me, let me tell you. But we loved it! It's inspired me to do more of "let's see where the day takes us" type trips. We got to all of our must do's too. I always ask my family to rank their top 5 trip moments, and all of them except for one (Wild Africa Trek, which was planned and paid for months ago) were the activities that we didn't plan.

I love it! Any chance of sharing your spresheet tabs on here as well? I like the idea of the list for things you need to buy, pack, etc. Right now I am just working off a Note tab on my phone for packing items, but I think I am going to order several things beforehand and have them shipped to our hotel and that would help keep it all organized in one place.

Ditto to the scaring of the boyfriend. I am in the exact same situation. He's never been to Disney though and doesn't understand just how much there is to do/see/eat. He's been to Universal a few times now and it just pales in comparison to the pre-planning that needs to be done at Disney.

It took a while, but I finally got around to taking screenshots of my spreadsheet. I left out a couple tabs because my to-do one was empty and one was just a list of things I wanted to make sure we did because I had fond memories of them. I'm happy to report that my boyfriend was a good sport despite his dislike of the super hot weather and the fact that I kept making him get up early.

This one is the master schedule with all of our FP and dining reservations. I also added rough notes for the major shows that I wanted to try to catch as well as the evening shows. The light blue marks park operating hours.

Dining.png

This one was by far the most complicated. I was trying to decide whether or not we should do the dining plan. The side on the left is what I estimated we'd order if we were just paying a la carte off of menus (ie. we didn't get drinks and desserts at every meal because we don't normally order that much food and I picked out several kids meals from QS places). The side on the right is what I guessed that we'd order if cost wasn't an issue because we were on the dining plan (ie. desserts and steaks instead of the cheaper chicken option). Based on that math, the dining plan would've been worth it because we would've gotten more value than we paid for dollar for dollar, but it was still more than $100 more than I figured we would've spent on our own ($637 was the magic number for the dining plan).

Packing.png

Packing list...pretty self-explanatory. I don't normally pack fancy wedding attire and heels for WDW vacations, but we were going on a three-day cruise afterward for my friend's wedding.

I listed most of the attractions that I thought would appeal to either one of us and we marked initials next to the ones we were most interested in. I think it's pretty obvious that I'm K and my boyfriend is A based on our level of interest.

Hope this was useful even though it's not nearly as pretty as some of the other ones posted.
