So Can Someone Explain To Me WHAT Tonga Toast Is?

I had it. I hated it. I love cinnamon. I love bananas. I love french toast. It was too sweet and too much! Plus I hate sourdough and I could taste it. My parents insisted that I would love it, so I decided to try it. Ugh! Hated it. I stick with blueberry pancakes or the breakfast platter with the yummy potatoes.

Tonga Toast is 2 pieces of sourdough bread with an entire cut up banana in between. It is then flash frozen, dipped in egg wash and then deep fried. Once out of the fryer it is rolled in cinnamon sugar. Strawberry compote consists of pureed strawberries and sour cream, it's tart enough to take away some of the sweetness of the cinnamon sugar. The compote is only available at Kona.

Cinnamon and sugar coated, banana stuffed breakfasty goodness!

Breakfasty? Heh, heh . . . now, that's a funny little word you made up--I like that! And, as others have mentioned on this thread, Tonga Toast is yummy. I only wish they'd also offer a smaller portion size, in addition to their large size, because many people can't finish them.

Here is the recipie for anyone interested:

Tonga Toast
Serves 4
Sugar-Cinnamon Ingredients:
3/4 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Batter Ingredients:
4 large eggs
1 1/3 cup whole milk
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon granulated sugar

Tonga Toast Ingredients:
1 quart canola oil, for frying
1 loaf sourdough bread (uncut, 12 inches long)
2 large bananas, peeled

Cinnamon-Sugar Preparation:
1. Mix sugar and cinnamon in medium bowl (large enough to roll toast) with a fork until thoroughly blended. Set aside.

Batter Preparation:
1. Whip eggs in medium bowl (large enough to dip toast) until well beaten. Add milk, cinnamon, and sugar. Mix well and set aside.

Tonga Toast Preparation:
1. Preheat oil to 350 degrees F in a large pot or a deep fryer. (If using a large pot, use a candy thermometer to make certain the oil does not get any hotter or it will burn.)
2. Slice the bread into four three-inch-thick slices.
3. Cut each banana in half crosswise, then each piece lengthwise.
4. Place a bread slice flat on the counter and tear out just enough from the middle (do not tear all the way through) to stuff half a banana into; repeat with each bread slice.
5. Dip stuffed bread into batter, covering both sides, allowing excess batter to drip off bread and place carefully into hot oil.
6. Cook 4-5 minutes until golden brown. If needed, turn toast over after 2 minutes and cook for another 2 minutes on other side. Remove and drain excess oil.
7. Roll toast in cinnamon-sugar. Repeat for each piece of toast.

I'm glad someone asked this! I wondered exactly what it was too. I have to say... it sounds delicious. I may have to try making my own Tonga Toast as the prospect of a trip to Disney World is far away at the moment!

I usually have a very sensible breakfast at WDW, yogurt, OJ and a piece of fruit but this past trip I had the Tonga Toast for the first time and I am hooked! I plan on making it as a treat to myself and only once a trip. I have been to Hawaii many times including Aulani twice and before having the Tonga Toast my favorite special breakfast was macadamia pancakes with coconut syrup, I now have a new favorite!

My husband and I shared this at Captain Cook's and it was good, but not as heavenly as I expected. Half of it was plenty as it is really sweet. No strawberry sauce at Cook's though, and that is okay.

I had Tonga Toast last week. I happened to see this thread a few days before that and expected the toast to be very sweet. It wasn't overly sweet at all. I poured quite a bit of the strawberry compote over it to make the bread moist and even the compote was not too sweet at all. Very delicious.
