Smushed penny question

The location of all of the pressed penny and quarter machines at WDW is located here.

I'm not sure that the list is complete. I know that it is at least missing one from Magic Kingdom. The one I see all the time that is not on the list is one at Tony's Town Square Restaurant on Main Street. It is in the restaurant lobby right near the door, so it is easily accessible for those who do not wish to eat there (although it has GREAT food).

As a previous poster said, Guest Relations would be the place to go to find out about any new or changed penny machine locations.

Don't get addicted! I know several guests that are. :animwink:

Sure, you'll want to get a roll of shiny new pennies for squishing.
You might want to also get a few roles for throwing into fountains and such. Kids (and their parents) get a real kick out of throwing pennies into the 'waters of WDW' (don't do this at AK, though...bad for the animals)...this is one of the cheapest thrills at WDW.

Shiny pennies really only matter in that they look pretty right out of the machine. But, if you don't have a shiny penny, and old dingy one is just as good, and you can polish it up like shiny new later with a copper polish.
The shiny pennies quickly turn into dingy pennies anyway.
And if you are really serious (crazy serious), you should collect the pre-1982 copper pennies, and shine THEM up before you go. They are harder and should be more durable, and technically more valuable.

Older Quarters work well too. They clean up nice when you put the wrong one in the slot to smush as well:lol:. I just used a little tarnish remover and wow did it shine. The quarter was a year that was still made with mostly silver so it turned out really well.

This also turned out to be one of favorite things my 3 yr old son did while we where there. He could spot the machines a mile away and loved picking which buttons to push to make his pennies and quarters. We almost filled up a book on our trip. He is still finding the machines around Pittsburgh and making them now:) .

Pennies will also shine up with anything acidic--lemon juice works, as does ketchup and salsa.

Save that $5 for copper polish and put it in the WDW savings jar!

Clean the ones you are going to use up before pressing them..

You can clean pennies by soaking them in vinegar mixed with salt. It takes all the dirt & grime off of them really easy.

Not to be a downer on these cuz I collect them too ... but I'm surprised the Govt. doesn't shut these down since it is defacing money.

Here's a website with probably more information than you really wanted about squished pennies (including the difference between "squished" and "squashed")

http://www.squished.com
go to features.

Here is an excerpt from the FAQ:

Wait a minute, is squishing currency really legal?

Absolutely! It's all in your intentions. The United States law Section 331, Title 18 prohibits altering coins or other forms of money for fraudulent uses. On the other hand, it does permit the altering of coins, such as pennies, without such intentions. For example, when squishing coins, you make a copper souvenir of your visit to a far away place. But although your squished treasures may have infinite value to you, they are no longer currency. So, squish away, unless you intend to stuff your local vending machine with 'em the next time your soda fund gets low.

And on another issue, I'm not sure that Canadian pennies would fit in the machines.

Candian pennies definitly fit in the machines, I've used them before. Plus, they're the same size anyways. One thing that dissappoints me is that there are no penny machines in my home park Canada's Wonderland.

Glad to hear that I can pick up a list at Guest Relations, I'll be sure to get one when I go next time so that I make sure I get all the ones I really want.

Another thing, are there penny machines at Islands of Adventure as well?

Yep. I have a few of them, but not nearly as many as I have from Disney. I don't know how many they have there, but I do know they have them.

Last summer I collected every single penny and quarter throughout the parks. I wouldn't recommend it - it ended up being quite costly, but once I start something like that, I can't stop. It's fun to collect your favorites, maybe!

We are goining to show her the first 2 or 3 and then let her find the machines on her own and limit her to 1 per machine. She might not even want to do it, so we will do a couple and see what happens.

:D Mr Toad/Mike--- Yes, it is a lot of fun trying to find the machines. We did/do this with my Grandson-- ( Sure was/is less expensive than buying the pins ) One thing that is interesting is that the designs you think would be at a ride or place are not? Like the TOT does not have a TOT design, but they do have a machine just before you enter the store after getting off of the ride. It is a quarter one, If I remember correctly-- However, the TOT does have a design someplace else-- forgot where. Anyway, this just adds to the fun of seeing what is where-- and trying to find them. Ha Ha---

When we stayed at POP last time ( October '04 ) I checked with Guest Services there and the CM printed me out a copy of the list. Similar to the one mentioned on this thread. However, it still showed the location of the 75 yrs designs-- I hope they are still around as we have a few more to "smush" ! Maybe they will add some new ones for the 50 year celebration??

I think Grandma is enjoying just as much-- :lookaroun As far as the books to put them in, I have seen them in almost all of the stores at the resorts and the Parks. At the Emporium ( MK ) they are usually buy the register- Sometimes I have seen them on top of the machines at AK-- They should not be hard to find. I believe we paid $6.00 for ours also. Owwwww I forgot-- They still have a few you hand crank yourself! Those are a real find! Ummm the dinosaur store after you get out of the ride-- the one down the path across from Dino land had one??? Ah I think??

Anyway have fun hunting, enjoy!!! and " Happy Smushing "
