Smoking Room?

I'm not a smoker which is probably why I didn't think of this till now. My friend is a smoker and I'm wondering if Disney offers smoking rooms. I don't ever remember being given the option to choose. If not can she smoke right outside the room door or does she have to go to a smoking section on property?

Disney stopped offering smoking rooms nearly or 7 years ago. None to be had, sorry. She may be able to smoke right outside of the door but if Mousekeeping smells smoke in the room you may be charged extra for the room at the end of your stay. (cleaning charge) Most people I have seen have gone down to the smoking areas.

All Disney resorts went smoke free on 6/1/2007. Each resort will have a designated smoking area and smoking on balconies/porches is not allowed. Disney is pretty militant about the no smoking in the rooms policy. They will fine the lead guest between $250-$500 if someone smokes in the room (I've seen it happen myself at WL).

I'd suggest calling/faxing a room request before you go, for a specific building or section that is close to your resort's smoking section. If at check-in you find you're assigned to a room that isn't close to the smoking area, ask if they can reassign you and explain why.

My DH is a smoker and he's the sort of smoker that has to smoke first thing in the AM and right before bed. We don't spend much time at the resort (we wake up, shower and we're off) but if he had to walk to a true "smoking area" right after waking he'd be even grumpier than he naturally is in the morning. LOL! :D

Now... we almost always stay at a Value resort so we don't have a "balcony" necessarily but there is the outside hallway obviously. Though I'm not thrilled with it, he does smoke out in front of the room when he needs to. The thing is however, he is very polite about it. He doesn't toss his butt over the railing or even ash anywhere but into a can. He does his best to make sure that if anyone is walking either below him or coming down the hallway outside the room they aren't getting a face full of smoke. In other words he is a polite smoker. On a few occasions he's been out there when Mousekeeping was going by and never once has anyone said anything to him. I'm not saying this makes it right obviously or that you should tell your friend that it's ok to do but I'm just sharing years of experience. We've been together 8 years and going to Disney frequently in that time and at no point have we had an issue.

Now... ALLLLL that said... this year DH discovered e-cigarettes and plans to use his "blue" (that's what the brand of his is) whenever he can't get to a smoking area on our next trip. He's a heavy smoker but the e-cig has been a wonderful alternative for those immediate cravings. You may want to consider recommending this to your friend for those times when a craving hits but a treck to a smoking area of the resort isn't an option. For DH, moving more than a few feet before he's had his first smoke of the day isn't possible. LOL!

My brother is a smoker and he was all crazy about it....but there are a lot of smoking areas, once you figure out where those are, your good.

All rooms are non-smoking. You aren't supposed to smoke on the walkways.

Some people ignore these rules. My mother lit up and I reminded her about the policy. I told her they might charge her. She asked how much and I told her, while she inhaled. She then slowly exhaled the smoke and declared, "I'll pay it." if they really want to stop people, assuming the fees would hold up in court (which I kind of doubt, if there is no proof), they need to raise these fees they're charging. Three or five thousand dollars might make people think twice.

I've seen plenty of people smoking outside their rooms. I don't blame them and it doesn't bother me.

Just to let you know the policy on e-cigarettes is that they must be used in designated smoking areas as well. In EPCOT we often have to tell guests those aren't allowed to be used. It is just to make sure we can curb the number of people who may see a realistic e-cigarette and light up right where they stand even though it is not a smoking section. It really is up to the CMs if they will enforce the policy or not but I was trained to direct all guests traditional cigarette or e-cigarette to a smoking section.

(must tag on I have to say this is my own personal experience and not necessarily the views of the Walt Disney Company it is simply how I was trained)

Thanks for that. The e-cigarette is water vapor. Unless they plan to also no longer allow the fans that spray water everywhere or plan to outlaw rain it's silly to make someone with an e-cig go to the smoking area. LOL :) I'm being silly obviously. I completely understand. We've run into our fair share of folks who act offended when he's "smoking" it near them so I'm used to the complete misunderstanding the e-cigs have. :D

It isn't a complete misunderstanding. There is no FDA information on the long term effects of the vaporized liquid that has amounts of nicotine in it. Until studies come out about its real side affect some people would choose to be more cautious. People smoked for 1,000s of years before we found out it causes a hoard of diseases. E-cigarettes came on the market with no FDA testing and no proven safety but because you aren't "lighting" up and because all the commercials say you can smoke where ever people think they can. It is still up to the discretion of the individual private property owners and many have chosen to say it is a cigarette and so should be kept with the cigarettes.

My brothers use them and I still won't let them use them in my house because I don't support their smoking habit e-cigarette or regular. They can quite but choose not to.

I can only speculate, but the Disney policy on e-cigarettes may have as much to do with "how it looks to have people walking around with something that looks like cigarettes" as it does with health concerns. The image of someone smoking (or appearing to smoke) is no longer considered family-friendly (as the furor over smoking in movies demonstrates). It's sort of the equivalent of walking around with a bottle-in-a-paper-bag, in that what you're doing could be totally innocent, but to a company striving to maintain a "healthy American family" image, it just "looks bad."

I can envision a way around this, however -- take your husband to MNNSHP, dressed as the caterpillar from Alice in Wonderland and smoking a hookah. Who would dare to challenge smoking at Walt Disney World if it is "well-themed"? ;)

Oh I totally get it... granted there is some irony in it as well. The way I see it, someone with an e-cigarette should actually be a positive image. Most people who use them are either trying to quit smoking or have chosen it as a healthier alternative for not just themselves but for those around them. I do get it though. These days, even when you're trying to make the right decision, there will be people who still say it's wrong and judge a book by it's cover.

That is the thing. We do not know if it is a healthier alternative. In all likely hood it is, but without testing and more importantly regulation on the ingredients it is still an unknown.

Consider the Dolphin, or the Swan...

WDW owned hotels HAVE no smoking rooms... but a little known fact is that the Swan & Dolphin (could just be the Swan now) DO. These hotels are not Disney owned. No ME service to them - but they DO have on site Disney Bus Service.

Being a smoker... please, use the designated smoking areas. A good chunk of America is already preparing internment camps and badges for us - even though daily individual use automobile emissions are a FAR greater hazard to anyones health. Every 10 years or so, the majority of Americans need to find a group to classify as inferior, and the source of all evil... this decade (at least), we're it.
This ^^^^ we are also smokers, as I have stated, but extremely courteous smokers at that (not that it makes smoking a good thing) We also bring Blu electronic cigarettes with us and still follow the rules as if they were actual cigarettes. We COULD puff away on our Blu cigarettes in the room, but dont.

I don't want to start WWIII with you here, but most people don't have to sit around with an exhaust pipe blowing fumes in their face. Nor do they have to walk through it. The current anti-smoking movement has nothing to do with the smokers being "evil", but rather with the smokers standing near someone who does not smoke and blowing it in their face or standing around while the wind carries it right into the faces of non-smokers. I have stood in lines outside (including in Disney) and have had inconsiderate *%&$#@*'s smoking right near us and not seeing a problem at all with anything they are doing. Or the smoker is standing in an area not designated for smoking (including in Disney) and looking at me like I am an a-hole for coughing near them.

By the way, I'm an ex-smoker myself. I know the desire and need for the cigarette.

Here is the type of inconsiderate smoker that is the root cause of the anti-smoking issue. :D

Well said. If everyone that smoked was as considerate then there would probably be no need for the smoking areas. I always felt horrible if the smoke from my cigarette floated into someone's face.

Thats awesome, and I feel the same way. To this date, I have never *lit up* in MK, too many little ones around!! LOL

That's actually the reason I quit. My daughter was 4 years old (13 years ago) and I flicked my cigarette at the opening in my car window and I hit the cherry on the window edge. A lot of embers from the cigarette flew in and some landed on her and burned her. I felt so bad that I threw that cigarette and the two unopened packs out the window and haven't smoked a day since.

I applaud your consideration... but I see that you still drive. You might be interested in this data...

http://www.forces.org/evidence/files/aircare.htm

"The average cigarette contains about 12 mg of carbon monoxide and an equal amount of tar (hydrocarbon-like substance). It also contains about 1.2 mg of nicotine. Nicotine is not a component of internal combustion engine emissions, therefore it is difficult to properly locate in this comparison. However, since it is part of "cigarette emissions" we will be fair, and shall add it to the total, which mounts now to 25.2 mg.
This is the equivalent of:
5.78571428515 [to the 15th power] (57,500 billions) cigarettes each year
7,358,400 cigarettes each U.S. square mile every year (including Alaska & Hawaii)
22 millions cigarettes per person each year
20,160 cigarettes each U.S. square mile every day (including Alaska & Hawaii)
157.5 billions cigarettes each day
60,875 cigarettes per person each day
2,540 cigarettes per person each hour
42.5 cigarettes per person each minute"

Second hand automobile emissions (the type that come from everyone in the WDW Parking Lot) are hitting you with a massive amount of contaminants. Is smoking bad? Probably - but it pales in comparison to the really BIG problems.

For myself? Smoking is a choice... but I'm well aware of the needs & desires of others. Just my belief - but I believe that being courteous and kind to others is the best way to go.... I'll always respect WDW policies, and NEVER smoke in an unauthorized area. At the same time? I'm going to get upset if someone designates separate bathrooms and drinking fountains for smokers. I was hoping that America had actually grown up a bit.

But I'm not inhaling from a tailpipe. ;)
