Smell at Epcot

Just returned from WDW. While at Epcot took my kids to meet Joy and Sadness and it smelled like a busted sewer pipe. Really strong. It also smelled in Feb 2015. Does anyone know what's up with that? Really not a magical moment sitting there smelling that?

It's been that way for years. I have no clue what's causing it or what they would need to do to fix it.
Me thinks that some folks really have never really had the pleasure of dealing with a busted sewer pipe and therefore mistake algae in the waters for the smell of sewage. The odors have a similarity, but, believe me one is much more intense then the other. Pretty much the same thing as thinking the the odor in the Monorails is urine. Really? When do you suppose that happened? And did one person go from car to car and "mark his/her territory? The funny thing is that those monorails have had the same odor since I started going there in 1983. It is a strong ammonia type cleaning, disinfecting chemical that they have been using forever. To me it is not unlike the smell of popcorn as you enter MK. Popcorn being more pleasant perhaps, but, still triggers memories when I ride the monorails.

It is the smell of the water used for irrigation - which comes from shallow wells. It's not contaminated with sewage, it just has a lot of different minerals, including sulfur.. It also stains light colored houses and cars - so be careful where you park.

The water is not the same as that taken from deep wells, which still has to be treated to remove the smell. People who use wells rather than piped in water have filters and aerators that remove a lot of the minerals. I still don't drink well water because I don't like the taste.

I don't know if the smell i'm thinking of is the same as the one the OP is referring to. There is a foul odor that has persisted in the breezeway through the Innoventions West building.

It doesn't smell like well water or sulfur. It smells like rotting vomit, feces and other decomposing waste from sewage. I am familiar with the sulfur odor from Florida well water, lived in a house that used well water irrigation. It had the exact same odor as Disney's shallow irrigation systems.

The odor near the Innoventions West area though is nothing alike, and only seems to exist in that specific area. And some of the more neglected monorail cars do have similar odors. It creeps into the air conditioning lines, worsening from the condensation and lack of cleaning.

I think someone narrowed the smell down to some sort of cleaner or air freshener used in that area (per a previous post a few months ago). It has always been a mystery to me, but I have never tried to track it down personally. It is an awful smell that seems to exist no where else in nature or Disney.

I have also smelled it on the far end of that building near the bathrooms located there. It does not smell anything like the irrigation or a broken sewer pipe.

Thank you sir. You were an inspiration.
I know what you mean. Everytime i go through the imagination pavillion there seems to be a pervaiding aroma as though a skunk has taken up residence.

I've always thought it was something to do with venting of some sort from Club Cool. You can smell it directly out the west exit from Club Cool, as well as in the Innoventions West hallway. For that reason, DW and I have always referred to it as Soda Farts.

This is the answer. It smells just like the well water at our country house and the source is probably the same: sulfur-producing bacteria. Duckduckgo: rotten egg well water

You should contact Disney about this smell and how displeased you were - you never know what you could get.
3 years ago we received 1 free Park Hopper <non-expiration> for my wife and I. We had a few issues with our day on the 4th of July. Needless to say we won't be going back on that date again >:(
Let them know - seriously.,

I hear what you are saying but in all honesty, it was a magical trip. My children loved it. I was just asking because I have noticed it on my last two trips. I just found it funny because I know that I am not the only one smelling it, and I would think that a company like the Walt Disney Company could get to the bottom of the problem and fix it. It really didnt have a negative impact on the trip. It was just a thing that makes you go Hmmmmmm?
