I went to Disneyland lastnight
And I see that They have opened Small World
I am not a really big fan of this Ride But I must say it seems they have bettered the Sound system and Refreshed the Paint inside the ride:)

On the outside of the Ride it is Covered with Scaffolding
and Big Green tarps
they are Refurbishing all the Lights and Paint
I cant wait to see how it looks when it`s done.:hammer:

I can't wait to see it! I am a big fan of any of the attractions Walt did himself, and the Disneyland version is so much better then the WDW version.

They are painting the facade in phases, so the entire strucutre will never all be covered up on any particular day!

Can't wait till next week to see for myself!

This means little by little they're fixing this attraction for Disneyland's 50th anniversary. I remember reading somewhere that fiber obtic lights will be added to the outside to give it a special effect at night.

That is still a big rumor about the 50th. But they are not adding anything, they are just touching up the front and fixing the mess they have made from the past few years of Small World Holiday. It would be nice if they did the fiber optic stuff but it would be a major rehab, which if we are lucky will happen maybe next year but I doubt it.

Could you describe the outside of the building? I seem to remember a ticking clock and water outside. The one we have here is just a building from smashed up to the main walk way.

The new paint job is going to transform the facade to the original white with gold trim color scheme. As we could all see by the new, faded color scheme, there was a "method to the madness" with that original white paint. Walt commented that the original white would make the maintenance dept. very happy, since it would require little maintenance. Well, we saw what happened with the colors. Let's stick with the white, why second guess Walt?

Back to white & gold?!! Cool! I never was into the Miami Vice pastels.

I don't think this makeover has much to do with the rumored 50th anniversary thing. Cause if it's only going to be a new paint job and new lights....well that kind of reeks of Presslerism doesn't it?

They should be getting ready to redo the ride for Christmas holiday version (but I think that doesn't happen for another month). Are they actually replacing large numbers of lights? Because what eventually happens by November is that the clear/white lights get replaced by thousands of Christmas bulbs. Don't know how this would work with fiber optic.

But to answer the question about the exteriror, outside of the ride there are topiary animals, an entry and exit river, exterior passenger loading/unloading area, and the train going between clock and backdrop. The backdrop is silhouette facades of famous architecture--Eiffel Tower, Pisa, Taj Mahal, etc.. Then every fifteen minutes the clock goes all "boinky" and a mini IASW doll parade does it's thing around the clock--kind of like the Glockenspiel in Munich and in Epcot Germany pavilion. Oh yeah, forgot the obvious, they really light this place up in spectacular fashion at night! WDW version is truly inferior to this one--have never really been told why--never made sense to me that they didn't copy the DL version or improve upon it for MK's.

Did I forget anything? Chime in if I did.

While I think the facade of IASW at DL and the outdoor loading at DL makes it a superior version than it's sibbling at WDW, there is one thing about WDW's that IS better than the version at DL. That would be the water right up to the sets at WDW's, versus's (sp?) the flume at DL. I remember my first trip to DL, thinking how spectacular IASW looked from the outside, compared to the version at WDW. It made the WDW version with the indoor load look like a poor relative. But once inside the show building I remember how dissappointed I was, travelling in a flume, being able to see the floor, the mechanics of the ride, etc...it really bummed me out. What I found interesting was the fact that Walt himself veto-ed the flooded room version, since the flume (from the NY World's Fair) was already paid for. One of the few times I know of that Walt chose dollars over show.

One more thing. While I loved the multi-colored facade, the fact that DL execs let it fade over time makes me think the shift back to white and gold is a smart move. It'll always look fresh, white.

The new paint Job is indeed for the upcoming 50th Anniversary....
The whole idea is to try to make the park as much as they can like it was when it opened....
The colors and such they used originally
There was a small note aboutit in the employee newsletter...:)

While I would agree that restoring the colors to their originals is a good thought for the 50'th, I have a hard time buying that sell.

It's now 2002, 3 years before the 50th, it would have to be redone again to still look fantastic in three years.

I think the idea is a great one, but I don't beleive for a second it's realted to the 50th.

It's a good change, no in fact a great change, but not related to the 50th, of course they are going to pump you up into beleiving anything you are willing to beleive. That way if they don't do a huge job, they have a history behind them to say yes we did honor the 50'th look how we painted back in 2002!

If it's really a change for the 50th, we will see it premiere in the late 2004 timeframe.

I'm not exactly decorating for Christmas 2005 quite yet, just because I'mm getting a Christmas tree in a couple of months.

We have the 20'th of TDL to look forward to, before it's DL's 50th.

I understand they are "saying" it's for the 50th, they post that outside the attraction as well.

I'm saying I don't beleive it, not that it's not the official statement Disney is saying.

Again I'm not calling it a bad change, it's a beautiful one, but it will be faded in 3 years, so you can beleive what you want as well.
