Instead of covering the Castle with LEDs lights, they should use LED spot lights which they could get the same effect with and then not have to worry using a crane or anything.

Actually, LED spots and washes do not provide the same effect. They would wash the castle in the color programmed or color of the gel. Such washes are already in use (though not LEDs to my knowledge) in the Christmas lighting in blue as a castle background color. In the case of the draped LEDs, the provide a very different "icicle" look.

And although the lights on the castle are stunning, I'm not sure it's worth weeks of guests having to see a big ugly crane in MK.

Does anyone know why on earth they're putting up the Christmas lights in August?

The going assumption is that they're multi-tasking with the crane, using it for both the Castle lights and the Liberty Square bridge replacement. If they're need to have the crane there for the bridge, why not get the castle lights out of the way now, and not have to bring it back in late October/early November?

Actually I think the Christmas lights on the castle are the most beautiful aesthetic improvement to the MK since it opened. It looks simply stunning. I kinda wish they were there 365 days a year and not just over the Christmas season!

interesting tidbit about the crane:

it's more than just the lights for Christmas. When Fay came through it washed a very big portion of the firework residue intot he gutters of the Castle. This caused a HUGE back up of water into the Castle Suite AND Cinderella's Royal Table.

Leaks began ( and are still) popping up all over the place. It became so bad that the restauraunt was nearly shut down due to leaks being over the food preperation area. A (very temporary) solution was presented (tarps over the leaks) and the restauraunt, after a 1 hour closure, reopened. The crane is to place the lights for christmas yes, but to also repair the damaged roof of the castle so that the leaks go away (temporarily).

The good news is that it only really leaks when it's raining.

The bad news is....it's Florida.

Everyone's surprised about Halloween and Christmas starting early but it's happening everywhere. Just watch Wal Mart, Target and the greeting card stores after Labor Day. All the holiday stuff will be creeping in.

Great to know I'll see the fall decor at the MK when I go. :) It is pretty early for the castle lights to go up, Disney likes to be prepared early I guess. I wonder if the earth globe refurbishment for IllumiNations will still be in place during 9/18-9/26. It possibly could be. We'll see how it goes. I'm also really excited for TSM!
