We took an impromptu trip to WDW and Universal this past weekend after coming oh so close to getting on a Disney Cruise. EMH at night at Disney, first at MK, then DHS. Tuesday morning before heading back we went to EPCOT for a bit. Fastpasses at Soarin' were already for after 2pm when we arrived around 10am. No new passes until after 12, so we went to check out Test Track. The line was outside, which is not unusual, and the wait time was at 30 minutes. One of the cms was telling folks that 45 minutes to an hour was more realistic, but that would put us in the WS just after it opened, and we waited.
An hour later we reached the last bend in the queue and could see the lines and doors to the design rooms. We waited another 20 minutes while the Fastpass line was wheedled down with just one row of stand-by queue line people going in for every 7 from the the FP line (x up to 8 people in a line, most doubled up on a number). So, in all, it took us about an hour and forty-five minutes to ride Test Track on a day that we walked into the Italian restaurant with no reservations, waited 10 minutes for Maelstrom, and were otherwise surprised that it was so slow (people waiting for the Friday opening of the F&WF).
So! When did they start merging the Fastpass line into both design rooms??? Every time I've used a Fastpass I either skipped past the design stage, or they only used one of the two rooms for the line. Expect to have long standby lines if they continue this trend with at least an hour wait if the line is outside when you arrive.
