Six Flags over Florida
December 3, 2003
Orlando, Florida- Six Flags Theme Parks announced today that their most risky and costly venture yet is well under way on the north side of Orlando. Six Flags over Florida is set to be in direct competition with Universal Orlando Resort and the Walt Disney World Resort, both major tourist destinations.
"Six Flags won't have any competition from Disney," one Orlando teen said. "Both parks draw very different crowds. Universal is the one shaking in their boots."
When Six Flags announced the park in early June, most critics said the park wouldn't last through it's first five years. Critics agree on this because Six Flags has a reputation for letting parks fall into disrepair and really bad customer service.
"You let us worry about that," said Lead Designer of Six Flags over Florida, Scott Shanklin. "This park will boast a customer service program equivalent to that of the Disney Cast Members down the road, if not better. Already we have thousands of trainees being taught everything they need to know to run this park. Also, every employee who will be in direct contact with guests must learn basic Spanish, French, and Japanese to better serve our foreign guests."
But why is Six Flags so cocky about the competition? Scott said that can be easily explained:
"This Six Flags is going to be unlike any other Six Flags park out there. It will contain next generation thrill rides and themeing. We realized when we decided to build this park that we would have to do something special, so we have decided to theme five of the parks eight lands to the state of Florida itself. These areas have been designed, but are being kept under wraps until the company decides to announce them. The other three areas will be themed to the DC Comics characters Batman and Superman and the Warner Bros. franchise Looney Tunes."
Many parks boast next generation thrill rides, but what will Six Flags over Florida actually contain? The company isn't revealing any details yet, but talks with B&M, Intamin AG, Huss, and other major ride manufacturers have been going on for a while. Rumor has it that Florida's first hyper coaster will grace this park, but it is anyones guess which company will produce the coaster.
"We have one ride that will be really special, even in this highly competitive area," Scott further commented.
And what about the rumored hotel?
"That was axed a long time ago. We are Six Flags, not Disney or Hilton. There were plans for an elaborately themed hotel on the property's southwestern border, but Six Flags, Inc. decided to focus all of their attention and finances on the park itself."
Six Flags has released the first photo of the Old St. Augustine area. The photo shows the recreated Bridge of Lions in St. Augustine and serves as the entrance to the Old St. Augustine area. Some touch-ups are still to be done, and expect to see the Castillo de San Marcos sometime in the near future. The photo can be found in Scott's Webshots Album.
