Singing Busts

Hey Folks ..

when I rode the HM last month I noticed the following:

the singin busts in the HM are using a DLP technology projector system which is very bad .. maybe you have noticed some rainbow effect when you approach the scene. This is because of the color wheel inside projector.

So when you focus on something else and aproching the busts you can see a nasty rainbow smear. Why did they do that ? .. a nice LCD beamer costs the same and has no smear.

What do you think ?

I just got some good video of this yesterday, don't remember a rainbow, But will check it out in a bit. and post it perhaps.

I noticed this too, and it is VERY bad. They could have gone with something cheap and it would still look so much better.

I see the same effect on some of the screens on Spaceship Earth, but it's not as pronounced since the images are in color to begin with.

I did also footage of the HM on my trip (complete ride through) maybe it's on there ... but cause your eyes are more sensible to this effect than any camera can be it might just be noticible when you ride in in person .. but I'll check

are you sure it's DLP? Most of the effects @ WDW (I don't know which HM you went to) are still film (believe it or not) and I think that the busts were using 3 Gun Video Projectors (like an old Barco or something like that). It doesn't just have to be DLP to suffer from the rainbow effect problems...I don't know what's it's actually called.

As for spaceship earth, I counted 7 35mm Projectors throughout the ride, but the ones where you notice the problem are LCD Projectors that need to be replaced.

on a side note, are you a projectionist as well? I'm surprised at the lack of threads in here that talk about how a lot of the attractions are done with reguards to film. I'm trying to get some pics of the loop cabinets they use, it's insane...

I'm a projectionist. I work at a 6 screen theatre near my house. I'm very interested in all kinds of Projection. I've worked with Christie Projectors and now i'm working with Cinemeccanica.

If you can find any pictures of the projection equipment at WDW i'd be very interested. I've been curious for a while. I'm hoping maybe when I become a CM on the CP I might get to check out some of the equipment

so as a specialist .. what do you think of those projections ? ...

btw .. on my SSE video you can see the dlp rear projection of the game scene (nature,space@ the descent) has some ugly color smear .. the camera can't catch a straight color

Honestly and i'm ashamed of myself for it, I didn't even look.

If it was bad I would have caught it so they're up to Par but I never really looked at it with a projectionist eye. I just looked at it through the eyes of that little boy inside of me that was having the time of his life in the place that he loves.

If there were scratches on the film I would have caught that in a heartbeat but my guess is they're using a straight digital cut of the video through a DLP or LCD projector thus no scratches. If I get out there on the CP i'll definitely be looking at it with my projectionist eye.

If you ever have the chance to become a projectionist it is one of the most fun jobs in the world but be forewarned... YOU WILL NEVER (EVER) LOOK AT A MOVIE THE SAME WAY AGAIN. You will notice the tinyest of imperfections in the film everytime you see a movie in the theatre. You'll see dust, green scratches, black scratches, vertical and horizontal scratches, hot splices, flickering, focus and many more possible problems in the presentation and they will drive you insane if you just came to see a movie. I went to see Garden State at an AMC Theatre and I chewed the manager out because I could not enjoy the movie due to the film quality. He says to me, "How do you know about all this stuff?". I tell him, "Because i'm a projectionist that actually cares about the films that are running and wants to have the best possible show for my customers when they come. I want that film to be exactly as the Director and everyone that worked on the movie intended it to be so I bust my butt to keep my films in pristine condition." He actually offered me a job. LOL

I'm pretty sure those are LCD....they haven't changed in years and DLP hadn't been out when they installed them.

Disney uses Ballantyne Projectors (same company as Strong and Simplex) and modifies them. They are VERY reliable and Gentle on film.

As far as me, I'm a long time Film-Tech.com member and I now work for Florida State university while I'm finishing my degree. Before this, I was booth supervisor of a local 20 screen AMC. I've used Strong, Simplex, Christie, Cinemaccanica, ORC, and Kinoton. I'm more of a sound guy though, just went to a Dolby Cinema Training Seminar two months ago that was awesome. Ok, back to Disney...

I'm going to be (just for fun) getting info for every projector running in the four parks, if anyone has info, pass it on is possible. I did meet a friend of Don Iwerks (his father Ube, penned Mickey Mouse) and he told me a bunch about Disney's systems....hopefully I'll get it all together soon....

I don't know actually, I asked in one of my previous posts......I do know that the HM in Cali already has (or is) switching to Video 100%.....sad but true.

I can't speak for the others, but I was talking about the WDW version.

I noticed the same thing too. However, I rode HM a couple times last week, and the rainbow was gone (I even moved my head side to side to make sure)
