He became chief CEO of Disney in 2005. Let's take a look at his 'achievements'.
1) Wasted a collossus some of money on the My Magic Plus system. Reports suggest it was close to one billion dollars. Enough money to build an entire new parks, or 4-5 Harry Potter type worlds. Most, including Disney, have conceded it was an utter waste of money. It won't be repeated at any other park.
2) An investment of up to 5.5. billion dollars in Shanghai Disney. Opening up just as the Chinese market is beginning to slow down massively, and with another park in Hong Kong that has struggled since opening. This was Iger's vanity project. A massive fail.
3) Has not invested in any single e-ticket attraction at the parks in Orlando. And one sole e-ticket attraction in California. Let that sink in for a minute. NOT ONE e-ticket attraction in ten years of being in charge. Eissner before him, as derided as he was too, built Animal Kingdom, countless e-ticket attractions, and invested in the parks. In Orlando, he has overseen the run down of Hollywood Studios, sanitising Epcot from it's original premise.
An example of his utter contempt for theme parks - is he green lit a cheap redo of Maelstrom at Epcot as a Frozen attraction. This has taken 2 years to finish, and is still no where near complete. Let's look at what OLC are doing with Tokyo Disney (who are run seperate from Disney, thus without Iger) are doing with their Frozen attraction :
Makes you feel cheated doesn't it ? OLC are also planning to invest 4.6 billion into their parks over the coming years.
Bob Iger doesn't get theme parks. It can emplified in this rather unflattering photo of him :
You see, we all enjoy that. We take our children, and let them enjoy the escapism, and have fun. Iger doesn't see it that way. He see's a man under that costume. He is not a theme park man. There are many like him, you say you are going to Disney, and they just assume it's roller coasters and fast rides - they don't see what else it has to offer, be it great landscape, themeing, dining, and most importantly rides that are out of this world. Iger unfortunately thinks it's just rides that go up and down, there is no love their from him.
Iger is no Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs loved technology, and implementing into peoples lives to make a change was his motivation. His sole motive was never profit, but to push boundaries of home technology into people's lives. John Lassister, over at Pixar, he loved his art, the motive wasn't financial. Finance was a mere reward for the love. Spielberg as a child loved making movies. He made his first movie for a few thousand dollars. The motive wasn't money - it was LOVE.
Does anyone believe Bob Iger has any love for the theme parks? Iger's first love is money.
4) The calculated 'pretend investment'. If there is anything more sinister under the tenure of Iger, is his calculated, almost sly 'pretened of investment', that keeps the masses (and Disney moms and their rewards) at bay. Big projects announced, that will take so long, so many years, that you wonder what sort of investment it's under. But the vast majority of people are fooled into believing he is investing. He isn't doing anything of the sorts. He is simply pandering to keep fans of Disney happy, and keep his shareholders happy. That's important - the shareholders.
You see Iger in August last year went up on stage and announced he was going to build Star Wars Land. The stock price took a dip up, fans were happy. Then nothing happened. Classic Iger. Even now, as we approach March 2016, not a single peice of Star Wars construction has begun. Now we have forecasts this is not scheduled to open for another 5+ years. This is despite him closing so many attractions in Hollywood Studios down, that were believed to be for this land - but foresight and Iger form were probably about cost cutting.
Daigon Alley took 2 and a bit years. The whole of the original Disneyland was built in a year. Repeat the forumla for Avatar, which has been in talks now for over 5 years. And we are still no where near completion. What on earth sort of bafoonery is going on here?
You know what he will build though? A cheap Toy Story Land. You will get that. Disney mom's will be happy with that. A Toy Story land, that is so cheap and insipid that it wouldn't look great in a Six Flags resort. He increased land space for the Fantasy Land, a project that he scaled back in investment, a coaster attraction that was cut back to it's raw limits, that ended up being nothing more than land space. But Iger and the media hype machine fooled you all into believing it was a huge investment - it really wasn't people.
Go walk around Disney Hollywood Studios. Now just now, but walk around it five years ago. It was so badly in need of investment then, but nothing.
Go walk around look at the empty buildings at Epcot. Nothing. Nothing at all.
Why doesn't Iger like to invest in new attractions? Why doesn't he want to leave behind a legacy, that he oversaw an attraction that will last for decades, that will be loved by children and adults the world over? What stops him? CORPORATE GREED IS ALL. You see with all other investments, Iger has seen a calculated way to increase money QUICK, bring the stock market price up and get in profits quick. That's why he has greenlit so many shops, including Disney Springs - it brings in money. But an attraction - it's a slow burner. You see, it will first take a fair while to build, then on top it will take a while for the investment to roll back in. Iger doesn't like that. You see, Iger wants instant money back - be it shops making money straight away, a weekend box office for his latest movie.
See, if Iger tomorrow invests 1 billion in theme parks - he won't see a return on that investment for a fair while. That one billion will come of his balance sheet. You know what happens when a balance sheet is showing massive losses, it comes out of Igers salary. But you see, people will come to the theme parks, generations, year after year - and profits will go up at the theme parks. But it's a long term strategy, that one billion investment will have people coming to the parks for decades. It's not a strategy that provides instant NOW MONEY.
The problem with his lack of investment, and his sole drive for corporate greed is he is ruining the theme parks. People will eventually stop coming, and profits for theme park division will go down. But you know what - Iger won't be around then! Another sucker can pick up that problem.
5) Iger loves movies. Iger is from a background of movies and tv. That's his true love. That's where he puts his time and effort. He procided over the biggest box office flops of all time in the movie industry, that would have collapsed any other studio - John Carter of Mars, The Lone Ranger, Prince of Persia - were massive disasters. Go read up on them and see the loss they made. You could have build two new theme parks for the loss they made! But you see Iger got lucky. There was a movie called Frozen. Iger had little to do with Frozen. It was a cartoon. The advertisment budget for Frozen was low. But it somehow struck gold. Iger got lucky and was saved. Iger has since learned his lessons and has performed well over the movie division since.
6) Iger despite prociding over the biggest waste of money in Disney history, keeps his salary high, and keeps money coming in for investors. His vanity projects have all failed, now cuts back his sole profit making enterprise - the theme parks in America. Cut backs everywhere. Why? Well, corporates got to get paid. Iger salary got to get paid. Iger was paid 47 million in 2015.
Cast members, who were once so religiously supportive of the guy, now finally see the true corporate man he really is.
LADIES AND GENTLEMAN - till we get rid of Bob Iger the theme parks in America are forever ruined. GET RID.
