should I buy the 2009 guide?

I just pre-purchased the 2009 edition ... it will be shipped nexy month.

The most recent one I own is 2005. But the main reason I bought it was to gain access to the companion website. I was about to join that website for $7.95, but then figured I'd buy the book for an additional $8 (discounted price) ... I'd have the book AND free access to the website.

actually, you will have access to part of the web site with the new edition, but you will still have to pay extra for the custom touring plans. I'm buying the 2009 edition for the same reason, however; it's still a good deal. But I just thought you should know that there are two different access plans.

Thanks for that info ... didn't know that.

The good news for me is that the main thing I want from that website is the crowd prediction calendar (more than one month in advance), which is included in the level of access I will receive.

Thanks again!

I love buying the Unofficial Guide, but I've gotten a little tight with my money, so I'm just going to borrow it from my local library. They usually have an updated copy every year. I'll just put in my request, and I usually have it within a few weeks of the release date.

As a ballpark estimate, at least 120 of the 860 pages change every year. Some of those are reader comments, of course, and the usual updating of prices and facts.

The '09 edition has a whole new set of survey research on the Disney resorts. The restaurant reviews are updated. The touring plans for the Studios will be different with Toy Story Mania. There's a new (and updated from '08) spa chapter. New research on which car rental places save the most money (even if you're using discount codes). And the usual smart-alec comments.

That being said, we know Disney's going to change the meal plan, resort and ticket prices on Sunday. Those won't be in the first 2009 printing, but we've already started posting those book updates on the website. If your trip is after February 2009, you could wait for the second printing, which will have everything, too.

PS: And you get free access to the online crowd calendar, which predicts wait times and best parks to visit every day for the next year. If you haven't looked at that, do so - it's pretty cool. We also go back and check how accurate the predictions are versus actual wait times, and those results are posted (free) on the website too. So far this summer, actual wait times are +/- 7 minutes from our predictions, on average.
