Should Disney Buy Cirque Du Soleil?

I get the "nothing like being there" argument, but when you make the show into a film that people can buy cheaper with the Benifit of knowing you won't have to deal with noisy people around you or blocking your view I'm surprised it lasted that long.

Believe it or not, seeing the entire La Nouba show on youtube was what got me into Cirque Du Soleil in the first place.

And to add insult to injury it looks like Cirque is cutting down all the touring shows to 90 minute versions. This is very bad.

I totally get getting into something that way but still when there's great material out there, it means the ante sort of goes up live for me.

prime example (and we all knew I would go here eventually) Bon Jovi, I've seen them before like an easy forty times, so I know what to expect more or less and it's to the point I use what little friends I've known in a related field of work or as many times as I end up going, score free tickets as thank yous from contractors I've used or a friend has used. like those good tickets I'm all there for (in the central park videos you can find my fat face second row thanks to me going with fast sprinters specifically knowing they would get a nice spot.) but like face value prices I would never pay for anything than floor seats because I know for 100 bucks less I can watch the tour video and actually see the show. sitting in bad seats looking at a jumbotron always focused on one aspect or in some cases special themed graphics you miss out on so much. and heck truthfully when I watched one concert playing at a movie theatre it was better than being in the garden.

to their credit both cirque and Bon Jovi have sold out huge places, but if you aren't bringing anything new I don't know why it sells, and that's in both cases. so like Jon released the circle tour, but it was after it played out, so you weren't going to see that same show again. with the same special effects and same fireworks.
I think cirque would have done itself much better service had they not recorded all of a show and instead released samplings from all over, it would give reason to bother going since it would be something new.

I think it's also time to confess I totally forgot where I was going with anything I was just saying once I started talking about Jovi concerts someone in that messy soup of words I churned out was an idea, obviously not a good idea, but an idea. I blame a long day of work and my deep down concern oand hole that Jon will start acting like a man and get Richie back on board. ( and why the heck didn't have bobby step up in Richies absence?) it hurts a little more each day since you know you can't howard the thought of hearing dry county without that solo..... *sniffle* *sniffle*

all I'm saying Is I think it was a mistake to have the cirque show entirely on DVD because you gave audiences an easier outlet for their fix besides seeing the same show live at higher prices. also Bon Jovi could solve world hunger and bring peace to the middle east if they replace Aerosmith.

I was disappointed to hear that Iris closed in Los Angeles. Seeing a Cirque du Soleil take on the history of film sounded fascinating and like a perfect fit for Los Angeles. I hope it sees a revival in some form.

I would hate to see Cirque go away. I always thought they grew too big too fast. They definitely stretched themselves thin and scaling back is a good thing. I would like for them to focus more on permanent locations and less on traveling.

A lot of people just don't understand the storylines either I can't tell you how many friends I had that didn't even know there was a story line until I had explained it to them. People like to be for fed anymore. We just get shallower

I couldn't follow a La Nouba story. If there was one, I missed it.

What is the story?

La Nouba doesn't have a traditional storyline. It's a clash of dreams and nightmares. The maid and one of the clowns are doing the dreaming.

Of all the Cirque shows I've seen Ka is the only one that has an obvious easy to follow storyline. The other ones I've seen were only hinted at subtly.

Corteo was another obvious storyline but I didn't see that one live. I viewed it on Amazon home video

This is just a hypothetical question but does anyone think Disney should would or could buy it out? I know Disney has made offers to buy it in the past but Cirque refused. Right now however Cirque is having some big financial problems brought on by the closure of many of it's unsuccessful shows (six have closed in the last four years though Zed closed because of the Japan earthquake and Saltimbanco was simply old but the rest were financial bombs) and there have been massive layoffs in both the headquarters and shows and many of the shows are sadly being downsized. And even worse they're being forced to close their signature show Alegria as a result as well.

I think I'd be for it as long as Disney let Cirque do their own thing creativity-wise and never force existing Disney characters into any of their new or existing shows (which would be disastrous) and hopefully never make any major cut-backs to existing shows. Thoughts?

Emphatically, NO! The fact that all those shows are closing is just a cleansing of the entertainment gene pool. I would have no problem if Cirque disappeared altogether. If nothing else, it might bring more diversified shows to Las Vegas for a change.

Wow, I take it you really don't like cirque?

It was the Immortal tour. This one:

Ah, well that explains it. lol Immortal is meant to be more of a rock concert tribute show to MJ rather than a Cirque show. Believe me when I say that the other Cirque shows are far more impressive and have a lot more acrobatics rather than just boring dancing. Here's a good example:

It was still good. Just not what I expected...based on seeing La Nouba.

Yeah that's understandable. For many of the more recent shows including Immortal Cirque seemed to think that a lot of dancing was a good substitute for acrobatics. I don't even remotely understand how they came to that conclusion. Some dancing is nice, but people don't go to Cirque just for it though.

No, I don't think so because some of the Cirque shows have more mature content that Disney might not want associated with them. La Nouba is a wonderful family-oriented show, but not all of them are like that.

P.S. (BUY BUY BUY!! SELL SELL SELL!!)

Only Zumanity in Vegas is a mature adults-only show. The rest of Cirque's shows are perfectly family friendly. Plus like I said before, Disney owns Touchstone Pictures which has released many R rated movies.
