Should Disney Buy Cirque Du Soleil?

This is just a hypothetical question but does anyone think Disney should would or could buy it out? I know Disney has made offers to buy it in the past but Cirque refused. Right now however Cirque is having some big financial problems brought on by the closure of many of it's unsuccessful shows (six have closed in the last four years though Zed closed because of the Japan earthquake and Saltimbanco was simply old but the rest were financial bombs) and there have been massive layoffs in both the headquarters and shows and many of the shows are sadly being downsized. And even worse they're being forced to close their signature show Alegria as a result as well.

I think I'd be for it as long as Disney let Cirque do their own thing creativity-wise and never force existing Disney characters into any of their new or existing shows (which would be disastrous) and hopefully never make any major cut-backs to existing shows. Thoughts?

I'm not a huge fan I the idea. apart from location nothing else really reminds me of Disney at all. in the same token I don't link amc movie theatres to be Disney and I don't consider splitsville Disney.
plus it would be nearly impossible for Disney to not impose creatively. if I'm not mistaken isn't the Vegas show very "adult" oriented in its theme?

I also think with marvel and Lucasarts Disney could maybe ease up on the spending spree as of late.

There are 7 Cirque shows in Vegas and you're thinking of Zumanity which yes is very adult oriented. However, Disney owns Touchstone and they've released many R rated movies so I don't think it should matter.

I also think Disney is far more Disney feeling that Lucas Arts and especially Marvel. Plus Walt Disney really loved circuses so it sort of fits in that regaurd.

Yeah, they've over expanded a little bit which may have caused their financial woes.

still interesting though, they must have all been selling out at some point to have such a large presence there. do you know if they run independent of each other like some chain restaurant or is it very controlled sort of like a Disney pyramid chain o command? again their shows can be really drastically different,I'm now sort of curious to see how they plan them out and what elements must be in place and what can't be included in their concept mapping of the routines and foundations.

Nope. First, Disney should stop spending money on things they don't need.

Second, if if the Cique people can't make money on it, that's a hint that it might not be worth buying.

Yes, it's very sad it has come to this. And Alegria is their signature show!

I get the "nothing like being there" argument, but when you make the show into a film that people can buy cheaper with the Benifit of knowing you won't have to deal with noisy people around you or blocking your view I'm surprised it lasted that long.

Disney shouldn't buy Cirque, it's on the property as another form of entertainment for the guests but they should keep hands off. If Disney did buy them, I think they couldn't resist turning it into a part Disney feature. A lot of entertainment venues are hurting because of the downturn in the economy, Cirque will regroup and continue to be successful, they don't need Disney to "bail" them out.
