Disney, the world’s largest media company, won government approval to build its first theme park in mainland China, its fourth outside the U.S. The Magic Kingdom-style park will be built in three phases covering 11 square kilometers (2,718 acres), according to Shanghai Securities News, and force about 5,000 families in Chuansha county to relocate, villagers said.

Just an interesting counterpoint to the happy joys that commence from hearing of a new park. Admittedly the article is a little light on substance, but it's something I don't think they have run into before when building a new park.

To be honest, even Disneyland relocated homes when it was built in the 50s. Actually the homes were moved, families relocated, and the moved houses served as offices during the construction phase. One of the kids who lived in a home around where Adventureland is today became an exectuive in the park.

It's not like this is anything new.

And plently of people lost thier land when WDW was being planned.

Not really fair to those people, but even I'd be willing to give up my house to have a Disney right right next door.:D

Except the government is taking the land through eminent domain, where as DL and WDW were both purchased from the current owners. As we saw with the Bonnet Creek resorts, people who didn't sell their land weren't forced out. Here the government isn't giving them a choice.

5,000 people to the Chinese Goverment is indeed nothing compared to the potential economic impact the Shanghai park will have on their economy. And besides, this is the same government that relocated 1.24 MILLION people in order to build the Three Gorges Dam.
