The Shanghai municipal government will invest more than 100 billion yuan (US$15 billion) in the city's comprehensive Disneyland project, Xinmin.cn reports.
The investment amount is set to far exceed that of the Shanghai World Expo, which was about 7.15 billion yuan (US$1.08 billion).
After the Shanghai Shendi Group Co., which was created specifically for the Disney project, signed an agreement with Walt Disney Co. in late 2010, the city planned to establish an international tourism resort with Disneyland theme park as its hub in the Pudong New Area.
The total government investment will mainly be used for infrastructure construction of Disneyland and its supporting projects which will cover a total area of 107.1 square kilometers.
The city is now working on the planning of the surrounding areas to attract business in the exhibition, tourism, recreation and hotel industries, according to the report.
"The supporting projects of Disneyland are one of our key work emphases in the next five years," said Xu Ling, the party chief who oversees the Pudong area.
Meanwhile, businessmen at home and abroad have expressed interest in the comprehensive project. Some foreign-invested and local companies have investigated the surrounding environment for further cooperation with the government.
The Disneyland theme park is scheduled to open in 2015. Large-scale construction work will begin in May 2011, the report said.
"We are constructing the supporting infrastructure now, including roads and the central lake," an anonymous official said on January 5. "After we finish, Shendi Group will carry out the large-scale construction of the park."
